He served as a soldier of the 12th SS Panzer Division "Hitlerjugend". With his memoirs, we with you will learn about what the German soldiers had to suffer in the Battle of Normandy.
This division was known as the "Baby Division", but the stubbornness with which they struggled for every meter of the French land was something that surprised everyone. Their resilience and fighting spirit were way higher than the other German divisions in this battle. Had all the divisions of the German Army in Normandy fought at the same high level, it could have resulted in the Normandy landings being a complete disaster....

I remember Erich Rupprecht as a PZ IV tanker in the 12 SS PZ Division, aged 14 in 1944 !
Captured in the Ardennes in December, he joined the Foreign Legion for 20 years (Indochina 46/54 Algeria 55/62).
Died in France in the 90's.

This is among the most underrated channels at YouTube which deserves at least 10 times more subscribers. The accounts by various soldiers on what they had experienced are very interesting, and important. There aren't many left of the generation that had fought in WW II, for the ones who survived are now very old. I look forward to the videos here and am pleased whenever a new one appears.

Very interesting diary. He was fortunate, normally it’s bad to be wounded but in his case it spared him from the the Falais Gap. It show just how vital air superiority is. I’ve wondered at times if the allied bombing campaign was to cripple German industry or attrition of the Luftwaffa…..perhaps both! 12:55

It’s just mind-blowing, trying to imagine surviving in a war like they did……😳

Interesting and informative. Excellent photography pictures 📷 enabling viewers to better enable the viewers to better understand what/whom the orator was describing. Class A research project!!! Special thanks to the veteran soldier Eric & other loyal infantry troops. Sharing personal information/combat experiences making this documentary more authentic and possible. Fighting/perishing/surviving knowing certain death/debilitating wounds were often possible. That's true grit style determination to succeed. Fortunately for the allies disillusioned/morphine addict Goring's Luftwaffe air force was about depleted. Otherwise the allied forces causality rates would have been 10 fold higher.

Sad to think that German graves are shown disrespect in Germany.

Something else that should also be mentioned. The training of the allies was lacking compared to the members of the 12th SS and other divisions. Many were trained by veterans of the east front, this type of training was real compared to the allies. Not to mention the equipment.

During the battle of Berlin, Alfred Czech was Adolf Hitler's "youngest hero".
He was just 12 when German newsreel cameras famously filmed him having his cheeks pinched by an ashen-faced Nazi Führer at his Berlin bunker after he was ceremoniously awarded the Iron Cross medal for outstanding bravery.

The 12th SS holding the area around Caen so long is what held the Brits and Canadians up until Monty came up with Operation. " Totalize" to break out. The entirety of HJ leadership were hardcore Easten Front Vets from the LSSAH... so many Canadian and British soldiers were killed in Caen that the Allied Commanders ordered no SS prisoners for 72 hours. These boys were a product of their time and they fought bravely. There were excesses on both sides. War is hell.

I remember that some of the tanker had traded their uniforms for the leather ones worn by the U boat crews.

The war was lost after North African campaign…luftwaffe pilots recognise this in July 1943 when the allies invaded Sicily…the allies dominated the skies just as they did in Normandy….

This soldier had to spend four years as a prisoner. Perhaps he was investigated for war crimes, such as the murder of the Canadian prisoners at Normandy. In any case, spending the years from 19-22 years of age in a cage must have been tiresome.
