This week in IT, I look at Windows 11 22H2 'Moment 1', including File Explorer Tabs, Suggested Actions, and Taskbar overflow. Plus, a leaked redesign on the Windows desktop and the Windows 10 22H2 update.

What do you think about the new design and tabs feature in File Explorer?

Correct me if I'm wrong but when I am looking at Win11 I see more and more MacOS, not Windows anymore. All that things like tabs in explorer or mini menu when you click on some text. Taht all MacOS and I work daily in mix environment switching back and forth between Windows and Mac, so I see this so clearly.

Personally, I like these new changes as it gives Windows a new look, better than what they were trying to do with W8. There’s a reason the taskbar is so limited, and this new UI may be the reason.

The “call number” feature may be a nice touch, but I wish it would be possible to do basic things like selecting and copying text from all possible locations eg within windows Mail or other such apps. For example, it’s often impossible to just select email addresses, so frustrating. Why not fix that first?

Does the file explorer tab feature allow for dragging a file from within the working area of one tab onto another tab, pause, and it will switch to that tab whilst holding the file at the mouse cursor, ie so the file can be placed in the other tab (ie copying a file from one tab / location to another)?

That’s the only possible useful thing I could see about having tabs. Otherwise, it is LESS useful then just having multiple windows.

This UI paradigm worked absolutely fine in Windows 10 taskbar (and earlier) - eg you could drag an image file onto a Word doc tab on taskbar and the word window would restore, allowing you to insert that image into the word doc. Also worked with loads of other programs.

I find myself using the phrase “supported in Win 10 and earlier” - surely that’s the wrong way round! Usually we say “supported from windows 10 onwards”! It is frustrating.

i've been using tabbed file explorers since i had xp, one i used awhile back was clover. i don't even use windows anymore, after one of their AI tested win10 updates randomly deleted 80gb's of my data in my documents folder i had enough.

Now I remember why I switched to Mac in 2016. What a headache.

Offering a "close to the right" option is fine, but it's _so annoying_ when "close to the left" isn't an option too. Why have one without the other? It's stupid! There are browsers that do this too and it's endlessly frustrating! Also why not have a "close all but this one"? Last time I clicked "close all tabs" it closed all of them, including the one I was focused on and replaced it with the "New Tab" or "Home Tab" instead. That was frustrating too. I thought it would leave the tab I was actively using open, guess I was the idiot on that one.

I heard rumors that by Windows 15, they'll have a dual pane file explorer and a resizeable taskbar. But I think it's bs.

i liked the idea of the tabs, cos i tend to navigate between many folders, but what i thought it'd be cool and couldn't ve fucked up, was fucked up. Why can't you drag them out? and why you have pinned folders on home, the point of pinned folders was having them quick access, if i wanted to do that I'd have shortcuts to all my folders on the desktops ir documents, congrats ms for fucking up what couldn't be fucked up.
