A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced, preventing brain tissue from getting oxygen and nutrients. Within minutes, brain cells begin to die. A stroke is a medical emergency.

There are two main types of stroke:

Ischemic stroke - This is the most common type, accounting for about 87% of strokes. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain gets blocked by a clot, cutting off blood flow to part of the brain.

Hemorrhagic stroke - This accounts for 13% of strokes. It occurs when a blood vessel in the brain bursts, flooding part of the brain with blood.

Some common signs and symptoms of a stroke include:

- Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arms or legs, especially on one side of the body.

- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech.

- Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.

- Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination.

- Sudden severe headache with no known cause.

If you notice any of these signs, it's important to call emergency services right away. Rapid treatment is critical, as brain damage starts occurring within minutes. Treatment includes clot-busting medication or surgery to remove a blood clot or repair a damaged blood vessel.

The most effective prevention is controlling risk factors like high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, lack of physical activity, smoking and excessive drinking. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and diet can go a long way in reducing your risk of a stroke.
