Hawker centers or kopitiam (coffee shops) are where these affordable foods are. It's scattered islandwide mostly in public housing neighborhoods and industrial areas. You can also find some in the city center but mostly on the outskirts. Just ask any taxi drivers and they are likely to recommend you a good place. That’s also where they usually hang out during meals or breaks.

As a Singaporean... I would say the most expensive part about touring SG is
1) Accommodation
2) Tourist Attractions
3) Alcohol and Cigarettes

As for the rest... Food, Transportation, etc... Its somewhat more affordable then most people think... Especially if you could, would and willing to eat like a local and travel on our public transportations...

Also... Tons of free things to do especially if you love Nature... Parks and Gardens all over...
