Grow Swedes 4 in a small bucket, called Rutabaga in the US , start to finish, it's a horror story.

From planting the seedlings to harvesting the Swedes there's always something that can 'go wrong' if the gardener takes his 'eye off the ball' and in this video it did! Decimated in a two pronged attack. Rutabaga (/ˌruːtəˈbeɪɡə/; North American English) or swede (British English and some Commonwealth English) is a root vegetable, a form of Brassica napus (which also includes rapeseed). ... The species Brassica napus originated as a hybrid between the cabbage (Brassica oleracea) and the turnip (Brassica rapa). So now you know!

Your videos are so tranquil. I love how gentle and precise you are working with the little plant plugs. Good to know about the grubs for the future. Thanks Jim!

Glad you have some in the raised beds - darn those caterpillars!

I almost didn't watch this video because I have never heard of "Swedes". Thanks for telling us in the chat that they are what Americans call Rutabaga. You may want that in the title. Thanks for another great video. I love the start to finish video. Sorry about the "horror" part of your video.

That's a real bummer, but I do like your start to finish videos!
Godspeed!

I was confused by the title/channel thought it was going to be a mark Felton type history video of some obscure moments in history 🤣 I think it’s time for the morning coffee

That's a shame those grubs got your swedes. At least you have some in the raised beds. I haven't tried those before but I do have some brussel sprouts but not sure if I'll get any. It's been so hot this season & dry in Minnesota. I haven't given up on them yet, cooler weather coming now.

I planted my Swedes in buckets shortly after you. I’ll wait another month before harvesting. I’ve kept my buckets on top of chairs to discourage any small animals from eating them. I have been harvesting the leaves to add to stir fry. Time will tell if I have better results without grubs.

My eyes cannot unsee the horrors you've shown and the tale you've shared. I am, however, better informed as I go forth, seeds in hand and all the hope in the It will be my first ever attempt at growing rutabaga/swede Here, in western Canada I've heard both terms used - rutabaga comes via the grocery store where produce often comes from the states), swede used 'mongst gardeners, colloquially. Whatever we call 'em, they are my devoted challenge this year and I only need to grow a few for this year's Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners.

Hi Jim absolutely love your videos wasn’t any kind of gardener till I started to watch you and molly a few years back now . My carrots were just like yours this year, I am also in the uk . Put swedes in and keep seeing white butterflies/ moths use a fly swat lol or I have googled and have successfully been using a spray bottle with soapy water in seems to have done the trick we will see in a couple more weeks when they have become big enough to harvest . Thanks for all your videos and tips, wish you was my dad or grandad to come see and get all your knowledge and wisdom of veg from lol . Cheers

not sure if I should have watched this "before" I had lunch or after
as I did. I'm not hungry anymore either way.😞 I recognized the spine like
green leaves however. Our Cauliflower this year was planted in a row between
peppers and onions. Never saw a single cabbage moth until we started
harvesting/cutting the Cauliflower heads. Coincidence?
Harvested 2 more potato plants from the raised bed. 7lb from 2 seed potatoes.
Snipped the tops on the last 3 plants and will harvest in the next week, weather
permitting.
Just weighed some harvested Ailsa Craig's, a bit over 1/2lb ea.😊
It's been a battle, but all in all very good results thus far.

Hello Jim.
Well you win some and loose some. Better luck next time.
Don’t take your eye off them.
Can I ask why are they going in the bin and not forming a part of your chop and drop?

Why did you bin them and not put them on the compost heap? I'm a terrible gardener, mainly 'cos I don't have much experience or knowledge.

I had a small amount of root maggot damage too on my turnips at least I could cut it around and eat the rest but I cant store them like that.

I'm so sad about your swedes. I have some growing in the garden right now. I first tried them on a trip to Wales and have loved them ever since. I've harvested two of them and they were not as large as I would have wished but were tasty. I'm the only one in the house that will eat them so I only plant a few. I'll have to go out and check on the leaves more often!
