Another method is to use somentype of grease to transfer the hole location. Just about anything will work, like grease or even lipstick. If you're worried about staining on porous items like wood just put down some painters tape first. I use this method all the time for making paper gaskets on old stuff that replacement gaskets have become obsolete.

I used a similar process installing magnetic catches on plantation shutters, using the srtike plate with the screw in the plate held inplace by the magnet. I installed well over half a millon catches over a twent-eight year run.

You can also just use paintets tape... the method shown is not perfectly lined up and youlll have issues with smaller pieces or pieces at odd angles
