How to Disassemble & Fix a Breville BOV800XL Smart Oven with Flaky Start Button

If you have a Breville BOV800XL smart oven with a flaky start button, the problem is likely a 5¢ microswitch. This video shows how to access that switch and swap it with the ℉/℃ button, which will bring new life to your oven.

0. Disconnect from the power.
1. Remove all the screws on the back, all the screws holding the feet on the bottom, and the 1 hidden screw below the control panel (through an access hole on the bottom).
2. Remove the back, then pull the cover back and rotate it towards the control panel to expose the power and control wires.
3. Disconnect the power and control wires, then remove all the screws holding the control panel to the cover, and then all the screws holding the white plastic cover on. The bottom center screw is slightly shorter.
4. Remove the control panel, verify that the start microswitch is mushy. Desolder the start microswitch and the ℉/℃ microswitch, and then swap them and resolder.
5. Reassemble, taking care to install the control panel gasket correctly and firmly seat the power and control cables.

I gave a thumbs down because this video conveniently skips over how to remove the housing cover. For anyone wanting to know...The housing cover and display will end up being removed as one piece. There is an additional screw on the bottom of the unit directly below the display board. Once you uncsrew that, pull the housing directly to the rear. Then, it should be able to lift up and off. As you lift the housing/control board off you'll need to carefully disconnect a ribbon cable so watch out for that.

Worked! Thanks for the help. For anyone else - the hardest part is putting it back together again! Take photos. Be organized. The gasket part - take that off slowly and note orientation. (And the spring for the button.)

Thank you for this, the disassembly was tricky but your video helped to see what was needed. I used new 5mm tall contact switches that many sources sell. In my case I also had an intermittent flashing of the display and buzzer, almost like a loose wire. I diagnosed that if I pushed on certain areas of the mainboard while it was powered on, it would trigger or fix the issue. I used a soldering iron to reflow every SMD connection to resolve any hairline fractures which I have seen before on other boards. The fix worked, and the flashing buzzing is gone and we have a reliable oven again.

Thanks for the video, always helpful to see how to take things apart. I have this same oven and it seems to be smoking out the top when I allow it to heat up. Planning on doing some troubleshooting soon. Thanks again!

Thank you so much!
I was looking for a tutorial on de-beeping this thing. The piezo mic was right there on the motherboard you pulled out.

I have exactly the same stove, but the transformer that powers the control board is not working, it is located at the back and is small, you can use its parameters to choose another one

We were just given one of these by a friend. And my problem is the mode selection knob malfunctions. Used to be able to pull on it or push on it a little bit to get it to move but now it won’t allow you to make a selection.

There's a lot of info here but unfortunately, you didn't show how the cover came off. The video cuts to a cover-less oven. I had removed all the same screws, but my cover is still captured in some way I can't see, and I can't get it off to work on the inside. I was hopeful this video might show that, but it skipped over. Thanks, anyway.

this video version I accessed does not show the microswitch replacement. Only the un-sodering and then the re-sodering on the board. Is there an extended video?

Hi! I too have a Breville toaster oven and when I opened it to see if I could repair it, I found a large piece of what appears to be asbestos. Its located near the wiring in the control portion. In your video and others I have watched, the asbestos is not there. Our unit, according to Breville, was manufactured in 2012. What do you suggest the average homeowner do? I have contacted Breville and their customer service person knew nothing about it but told me she would ask around and call me back. I'm still waiting. Thanks.

I’m wondering if this might be the fix for mine. The start button will go on/off rapidly, while it beeps, almost like a broken record over and over. It’s so annoying. We have to give it a smack to the side to make it reset, but then we have to set all of the modes up again and hit start. Even then, it will still go wonky the start button goes on/off. You think just replacing the buttons will solve the issue? Not sure what else it can be, but it seems like if we lightly touch the buttons while the oven is on, it starts going crazy.

Mine has two security screws on the back of it as its a newer model. System zero security screws. They can be defeated with a pair of snap ring pliers. FYI.
