Confirmation of Death - Simulation

Verifying death is a necessary part of being a junior doctor. This often occurs out of hours whilst on-call.

There is limited training on how to actually verify a death.

This video is based on procedures in the Oxford Handbook for the Foundation Programme and takes a guided step-by-step approach to verifying a death.

This is a guide and hospital procedure and policies should always be checked.

Thanks so much. I'm an R.P.N. working in Ontario, Canada. I was doing a home visit (palliative patient) and was told that I was to pronounce. Thanks to your video, I was prepared. God bless :)

The last step is to cover the deceased with a white sheet.

It was my early professional life and I used to become afraid of declaring a death. Then, I completely sthdied the topic "how doctors confirm a dead patient?". I collected all the points and made an article which ranks on first five in Google search. Also, I have a video on the same tpoic on my Youtube channel. Now, it is okay for me to declare a dead patient. What do you check in a dead patient are absent pulses, BP, heart sounds, repiratory sounds, pupillary reflex, corneal reflex and oculocephalic reflex (doll's eye movements). There are also no response to painful stimulus and straight-lined ECG.

recently i had the same situation, all signs that u saw were present but patient's body was warm. I was really confused abt the declaration but i finally declared as a dead. I though if the body is warm then there must be some sort of life. pls Guide.

That's a external exam don't they do internal exam? in body to confirm the person is actually dead cause I would think that external exam alone isn't sufficient enough to say they are really dead

Shouldn't you go to the bedside with the knowledge of whether the patient is a DNR or not?
