Ireland is the first country in the world to pass a constitutional referendum allowing same-sex marriage. As Charlie D'Agata reports, homosexuality was illegal there just 23 years ago.

The Irish have always been underdogs where oppression leads to resilience! What an incredibly beautiful people and still you smile through centuries of horrendous oppression.

I'm an American born Irish teenager and this is my speech:

On May 23 of this year, Ireland celebrated history, Ireland celebrated freedom, Ireland celebrated equality, Ireland celebrated happiness, Ireland celebrated peace, Ireland celebrated unity and love. Ireland has done so much for everyone in recent years and it was about time that Ireland had done something back. The Ireland that I was bought over to from Atlanta, Georgia at an early age, was hostile in so many ways. As far as I know I kept on thinking instead of making a referendum to redefine marriage, you could instead put civil partnerships in the consistuition and not legalise same sex marriage. This new example from Ireland will show other countries what it is like to celebrate equality and show them the right thing to do. I initially voted No to the legalisation but this experience has now shown me the true meaning of equality.

Also I'm not gay, I just poured out my feelings and opinions out to you all. Thank you for reading.

Just to clarify: the repeal in 1992 was of laws on the Statute Book from the centuries of English occupation. In 1922, with Irish Independence, all British laws were still operative unless specifically repealed. Independent Ireland never introduced any legislation related to homosexuality. As far as I know there was also never a prosecution under this English law while in post WWII Britain there were 50, 000 prosecutions. I welcome corrections.

I think people should love who they like. I just have a problem with them making children think two men or women can create a child. I was adopted and it gave me issues, such as not knowing who I looked like or what I would grow into. It took me years and lots of money just to find out. Adoption should be a last resort of somebody who can't look after a child. I think it's sick to purposely create a child and hide their real identity for selfish reasons. Especially if they use eggs from one women and implant in another, so they have no link to their biological mother.

This is wrong, New Zealand put through a vote in 2013 for gay marriage to become legal.
