Voters in the Republic of Ireland can take part in a referendum next Friday on whether or not to legalise gay marriage. In a Politics Europe film from Galway, Adam Fleming hears how the debate has become heated in a country where religion still has a big part in public life.

Well the city you saw here voted overwhelmingly to legalise it! I live just outside the city in the countryside, and I remember I roller skated over to the polling station with my Mam to cast her vote, and I was carrying the LGBTQ+ flag, and I knew that our country would say yes ❤️🏳️‍🌈

I don’t understand why gay people can’t love who they want and marry who they want?? It’s sad how parts of the world have allowed gay marriage but Ireland didn’t thank god they have now, im just thankful I live in a place where no one cares if I marry a man❤️ LOVE is LOVE

In the country there are a lot of problems... Racism, recession, unemployment. Drugs are sold at every turn, on roads gone by the autopilot, drunk... And in what Ireland the first? Among the advanced gays? It not achievement and not progress!!!
