The "flute player" was very much underrated. Fantastic song. Thomas was my favorite member of the Moody Blues.

I once sung this song to Ray Thomas who played flute and wrote the song. Lovely Man and very talented. God rest his soul

For peak MB psychedelics I suggest the “Have You Heard” medley from “Threshold of a Dream”. All of side two for that matter. It was my go to listen when I was on a voyage back in the day.

Ray Thomas on flute is in a class of his own! This is just one of dozens of classics by the greatest band of all time.

Here's the history for you ~ ~ ~ The song's lyrics are about 1960s LSD icon Timothy Leary. The opening lines: “Timothy Leary's dead / No, n-n-no he's outside looking in” allude to Leary's use of eastern mysticism to frame the psychedelic experience. The Moody Blues – some of whom had taken LSD in 1967 – didn't meet Timothy Leary until their first U.S. tour, later in 1968. “We met Tim, and he wasn't offended by our lyrics at all, ” said Hayward. “He enjoyed it, and we became friends over the years.” Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert ~ who became known as, Ram Dass and became a very well known spiritual leader ~ ~ were students at Harvard who explored the use of drugs ~ they got kicked out, lol. Their story is pretty amazing ~

Hey dude. It is great to share the love of The Moody Blues. Timothy Leary was an academic guy who led researches about LSD stuff that he even applied it to himself to feel what it does.

Nice to hear a reaction to something besides "Knights in White Satin". They are so much more than that.

If you're going to this era of Thee Moodies ya gotta hear Ride My See Saw.

When this song was recorded, Timothy Leary was still very much alive. 🤣

They packed so much beauty in this song.
The harmonies
The melotron
Mr. Thomas on his flute

It really takes me on a journey, a trip without any chemical inducement. ✌️👍

I really like In Search Of The Lost Chord. Mellotron so dominant in this track, great.

Saw Prof Leary at our University in the late 70's. His talk was entrancing and difficult to follow. If you held with him, it was like a trip. Towards the end, the hall was filled with tension, everyone trying to stay with him. He suddenly brought us back to where we were, the tension gone, and the crowd broke in both jubilation and applause. This song really describes him.

Oh, you got this amazing classic! I really hoped you would! One of the best songs ever made. Really psychedelic! This is really good to listen to, sitting on the floor alone in a dark room with your earphones on, the stereophonic sound flying over & through you. You don't need any drugs to get high with this song.

One of the songs written by "the flute player." They were each quite talented.

Timothy Leary was a guru who got people high on LSD. I think he may have even been a professor at UC Berkeley, or maybe a scientist or doctor, something like that. These guys are amazing, Ray Thomas with his flute blends so well with Mike Pinder's Mellotron. And you're right, a sitar is in this & some other songs of theirs, especially on this album, In Search of the Lost Chord. They are all musical geniuses, all 5 writing & playing multiple instruments, & 4 of them singing lead. This song is in my Top 3, too, along with "Nights in White Satin" & "Tuesday Afternoon", although there are so many other outstanding songs by them: "The Actor", "The Voyage", "Gypsy", "Candle of Life", "Minstrel Song", "Melancholy Man", "And the Tide Rushes In", "One More Time to Live", "You Can Never Go Home", "Lost in a Lost World", "New Horizons", "For My Lady", "When You're a Free Man", "Had to Fall in Love", "Other Side of Life"...
