I wish I would of seen this video before some of your other ones, you touched on all the points here that I've been trying touch on in the comments.
I keep seeing people saying that this is no different than anything they already have and in the context of hunting, they're not completely wrong.
The PRC will be inherently more accurate/consistent due to the tighter tolerances held in chamber dimensions, so in that regard, it is better. But in the context of hunting out to 4 or 500yrds is it enough to matter.... probably not.
What you touched on here that I haven't really noticed elsewhere is the fact that if you're only looking at this cartridge, and the PRCs (6 Arc included) in general, in the context of hunting, you're completely missing the point because it's not what they're really for.
To me at least, it seems that Hornady has developed a family of cartridges specifically geared towards the long range target shooting crowd. Something that people can get over the counter and just go shoot. They don't have to deal with all the custom rifle and ammo reloading side of things if they don't want to.
The popularity of long range, and sport shooting in general, has been steadily increasing and I think Hornady has recognized this and is helping to develop that market by offering it what it needs.
I'm seeing hunters get all bent out of shape over it because they feel as if this is taking away from their supply of ammo. And while that may be true in the short term, long term there will be plenty to go around.
And let's be honest here. If all you're doing is hunting, you're only buying a couple boxes of ammo a year anyways. Lol

Great video. I curious what makes a cartridge "designed for match" compared to PRS and hunting?

I may be mistaken but thought the 28 Nosler was 1/9 twist.

Because this cartridge is apparently aimed towards longer bullets. And lighter no lead bullets stand to gain from a longer bullet. At some point we need to see a comparison of lead to no lead bullets.
While most of my rifles are relatively inexpensive. They do add up in cost. And I have been shopping for my next rifle to be something that would take a wide range of bullets. And be somewhat versatile. I have several shorter range rifles. But I am looking for something a little longer range than my 6.5 Creedmoor, .270 Win, or my .308. But hope to have recoil that is fairly manageable.

I agree that this may wipe-out the 7 SAUM. Most everyone builds a 7 SAUM on a long action anyway. This will be a 7 SAUM Plus that's mainstream.

You can get a barrel with any twist that you want.

It's just a modernised version of the .284 Winchester, the case length is the same without the rebated rim case and changed the shoulder angle.

More cartridge types makes it harder for manufactures and retailers to keep consumers supplied, so the 7 PRC adds to the lack of availability of components for the 7 SAUM, but it doesn't replace it for those who prefer/want/need a short action cartridge over a standard length one. I'm not willing to give up the SAUM, but I did convert a 6.5-284 to a 6.5 Wby RPM in a long action, so I won't say never.

.284 Winchester. Lapua brass and known free bore that works for 175 -180 gn bullets. SAUM brass is almost nonexistent . 7 Rem mag still rocks!!!

Same as 7lrm. Gunwerks has been using for 7 or 8 years

Hat's off to you sir. Must be tough trying to justify the existence of another 7mm that doesn't offer any obvious advantages over the existing 7mm cartridges.

What do you think about the 7mm-08 AI?

🤠 Thoughts on the 7mm prc vs. the competition: So we have established it is not a short action cartridge and because it is fatter, the 280 AI will hold an extra round in the gun! Of course the only reason that the 280 AI exist is because the 280 is just not as efficient as the 270 and 30-06 with that same cartridge design, so the AI version of the 280 actually works better than those other AI's of the 30-06 and 270 Win.! Then their is the fact that the older guns all have a 1 in 9.5 twist, which prevents them from shooting those heavier bullets well! So, if you match up your 270wsm to the 7mm Remington Magnum with that 150 grain Nosler ABLR (as I said earlier) and your gun likes it, you have 7mm Remington Magnum performance in a true short action cartridge! Now, if you don't reload, and you compare downrange performance of the Nosler Factory 280 AI 150 grain Nosler ABLR load (2, 930 ft/s) to the 150 grain Nosler ABLR load (2, 900 ft/s), due to the higher B.C.'s of the 0.277 150 grain bullet (B.C. of 0.591) vs. the 0.284 150 and 160 grain Nosler bullets (B.C. of 0.546 and 0.531), the 270 Winchester wins downrange over the 280 AI! So, with the right bullets - and it is going to get better for the 270 Winchester as these new cartridges and heavier bullets come onto the sceen - do you really need anything bigger? I personally don't think so! If so, then we have already discussed the attributes of the 300 wsm and 30-06 in our previous conversations and the answer is their are other established cartridges out their that can do everything you need in the lower 48 states! Though, my Grandfather killed everything (and I do mean everything - lower 48 Woodland Caribou, Bison, Moose, Elk, Sheep, Mountain Goat, Whitetail Deer, Mule Deer, Black Bear, Grizzly Bear, Wolves, Mountain Lions, Coyotes, Foxes, Pronghorn Antelope, etc... the list goes on) with his 270 Winchester! So, I know that I don't "need" anything else! If I need a heavier bullet, then out comes my 30-06 and that shot would be at closer ranges anyway! 😁

Someone needs to tell Hornady that we are in a recession and this new iteration doesn't measure up to the lack of ammo they are already behind on. The SAUM and WSM already have filled the nitch and the SAUM in particular clangs the steel much more economically powder wise. Another very slow out the gate cartridge that I really doubt many have the need to spend another one to two thousand on a rifle and add the cost of the appropriate LR required type scope to the equation. I have a 6.5 06 AI and a re-barreled 1/8 270 WSM that I'd run against it and ammo for either is easy to get and make. I was really hoping for a 25 PRC short action cartridge to vaporize yotes from my porch while having coffee in the morning.

i think hornady has built a set of calibers for people who likes to shoot long range precision shots for what ever reason with straight out of the box success everbody seems to modify ever caliber to some degree for there likings now with these caliber they can get the best of it all better bullets and guns

We have a trillion cartridges now! I’ve been giving this a lot of thought lately and here’s my take. 5.56 in an AR. 22 Creed for coyotes. My Sig Cross 6.5 Creed fir whitetails and mulies in the lowlands and foothills. 7mm SAUM for longer range deer and 400 yard elk. Beyond that I’m ringing steel, not risking a bad shot on game just so I can brag about my 1386 yard elk. When I hear some blowhard talking about his extreme range kill I tell him I wouldn’t be mouthing off about being that bad a hunter that I couldn’t get within 3/4 of a mile of my game. I’m a fairly large guy so I can say that but this entire fad pisses me off. I wonder how many animals are mortally wounded before one gets tagged?
