In Kirk's defense, his absence was by Carol Marcus' request, who apparently didn't even tell David that Kirk was his dad until the incident with Khan: "I did what you wanted. I stayed away. Why didn't you tell him?"

Well, considering that he didn’t know, he was a dad to Beverly’s kid and his other son from the series that appeared in one episode with the full grown man who pretty much didn’t want anything to do with him so I want to say it’s still up in the air

How could Picard be the be the worst dad, when he did not even know he was a dad.

I think that Honor or rather Honor goes to Magnus Hanson the father of Annika aka 7 of 9. As he is so Obsessed with his work that he endangered both his Daughter and Wife, along with himself. To the Point where all three of them where Assimilated by the Borg, and at the same time he not only unknowingly made his Daughter a Orphne but also made her be Traumatized so much that she was and still is I think by the time of the Picard Series Basically suffering some PTSD with the Borg. And not only that but also I he doesn't know when or even how to call it quits not even when he is forced to basically. I get being in love with your work that you basically don't want to stop you just want to keep on working until it's been complete, but this too much and besides it's not like he was chasing after Unknown Space Anomaly Safely back at Starfleet. No he was out in Space Chasing Something way much more Dangerous then some Strange Space Anomaly. From One Querent to the Next.

The existence of Worf immediately renders this question pointless.

A shocker indeed.. JL has alot of filling up to do after this episode.. still, knowing him, mon admiral probably seen this coming so he's pretty much got himself covered.. I love it when Picard has an ace up his sleeve and later uses it as his wildcard to not only benefit himself, but to others as well.. and Hector, lets not forget Jonathan Archers' dad Henry Archer who is a pioneer in warp flight alongside Zefram Cochrane AND inspired young Jonathan to "not fight the wind" while playing with that ultra-cool flying remote spaceship (I really want it, so cool) thus creating that father-son bond that Jonathan cherishes till his Captaining days on the NX 01. So Worf takes the bad dad title? I'll take it.. He's badass anyway!

Sidebar: Why does Hollywood think personality is genetic? All those references to Jack being just like Jean-Luc don't add up.

Estranged means "no longer close" or "less close" ... whereas Picard never knew he was father to Jack so has never been close to him, and the way you specify he was absent you make it sound like a choice he made when HE DIDN'T KNOW!!! He can't be held responsible for not being a father to Jack when he had no idea he existed.

While you can defend Picard not knowing the existence of Jack Crusher...I would still mark him down for abandoning Elnor as the young Romulan viewed Picard as a father figure.

Q was NOT a bad dad. He was just a parent who had never had parents and came from a species that didn't reproduce on the regular, so there was no custom for parenting. His son was wild and his mate's response was to disown the boy and run off, leaving Q to parent alone. So what did Q do when he was at the end of this rope and needed help? He sought help from Janeway, someone he believed would be willing to offer that help, and he was right. Even when he left his son with Janeway, he was watching. Yes he failed to appreciate Q Jr.'s essay, but that was because he feared his son would end up an amoeba for eternity if he failed to improve enough to the Continuum's liking. In the end, he set his son up to prove himself in a way he thought his son could demonstrate his growth and then sacrificed his own freedom to ensure his son stayed with him. Q was a good dad. He just had a kid as irrepressible as himself.

While Sisko is a close second, Rom was the best dad.

Look we all know Worf is the worst father in Star Trek. That is just objectively true.

Tom Paris abandoned his salamander kids. Made me sad.

If we’re talking more generally, Captain Freeman is the worst Star Trek parent. Say what you will about Worf and Picard, at least they weren’t convinced, despite all evidence to the contrary, that their kid was out to backstab them.

Benjamin Cisco was the best Star Trek father.

Picard never had a kid with Doctor Crusher. That's ridiculous.

Sisko knew Cassidy was pregnant, and still decided to remain with the Wormhole Aliens 😄 so their kid won't have a dad, ever.
