Is matte PLA stronger than glossy PLA?

In this video, I attempt to figure out whether or not the matte finish Hatchbox PLA I just got is stronger than the regular, glossy finish PLA.

I love their matte filaments too, looks great. I just wish they were stronger. I'd say they're limited in use to decorative components or to parts that are low stress but you want them to look good. I think for instance if you're making the ever loved Ikea lack enclosure and need some leg spacers you could use a stronger PLA but make matte skin to fit around it which you can bond with super glue. It would combine the best of both worlds on top of an overall stronger part due to the super glue bonding all the layers together between the skin and the actual part

I love how these tensiometers sound like Mechagodzilla

Very interesting! Now, what about impact resistance? From the testing I have done, the matte may be better in impact.

In the Z direction, matte is 1/2 as strong. That being said, I printed a Glock 17 in Polyterra and it has held up to 65 shots so far. So it is still plenty strong.

do you find that you have to change any of your slicer settings for matte pla?

I use polymaker. I never tested in a proper way like you guys do here in YouTube. But i can confirm, that the matt versions are weaker. But, omce you imcrease the printing temperature. It will be just as good like the shiny ones. What i actualky like with the matt filaments. Its much easier to remove strings. Gluing parts together holds much better, nuts can be perfectly sit in just in the right size... Once you make a practical part from plastic, i think you also know that its not that 1-2kg that will makes the difference.

From my experience, if you need something structural, matte is not going to be your friend. If you want something that is smooth and layers blend really well, matte is worth looking into.

Have you tested this with matte black PETG by chance? Curious how it compares

Are you using the same temperature? some reviews in amazon say that matte needs more temperature, and it's also more difficult to print

YES! If you plan to PAINT your parts AT ALL. Matte will hold paint easier than gloss if you want to skip priming.
