Comedian Jon Stewart was a tireless advocate for first responders who became ill after working at Ground Zero following the 9/11 attacks. Now Steward is going before Congress again to fight for veterans who believe they were sickened by burn pits. NBC’s Lester Holt spoke with Stewart.

Our healthcare system and Congress are a joke when it comes to veterans who lay down their lives for our country. So disappointed.

Thank you! Thank you! My husband has been diagnosed with melanoma his back the many years later on his face. He has both COPD and Emphysema. Had two separate forms of Kidney cancer. Also has Chronic Sinusitis. Actively today is fighting Chronic Lymphatic Leukemia. He was denied all VA benefits in 2013. Deployed twice to the area.

That's the USA 🇺🇸 never taking care of anyone who isn't rich and powerful. I feel really sorry for those who are suffering under this obsession with imperialism and capitalism.

I have extreme trouble breathing and I have severe stomach issues. These things in studies are being tied to burn pit exposure. The VA tells me it’s allergies and bad diet. I have battle buddies with the exact same symptoms. They don’t care. No one does except my family.

Just think an incinerator near a major city releases dioxin and a host of other cancer causing chemicals and these incinerators have buffers and filters that absorb a lot of those chemicals preventing them from being released into the environment. Not to mention the recycling of those emissions to get burned a second time. For them to say open pit garbage piles set ablaze poses no or little risk is crazy.

I have diseases from burn pits that I shouldn't get until I am 75 years old. Served in Iraq 04 my blood has been messed up since I got off the plane. Also. My conditions are fatal I'm only 52 and have aged 25 years in this time 10.5 years after getting out of the Army

This happened at Area 51. I had no idea it was happening to our veterans. We had a burn pit just outside of where I stayed. So far I'm "healthy". Thank goodness
