very thorough analysis. i agree that the main reasons were political rather than practical. i could also imagine the empire was concerned about droids, one way or another ending up in the wrong hands, so its safer to scrap them.
with regard to the E-5 if read several sources which state that while functional the E-5 was not very accurate, and was prone to overheating. not a problem for a droid but a big issue for organics.
