I think only few people get MJ's character in Homecoming. SHE TOTALLY HAS A CRUSH ON PETER FROM EARLY ON :
1. She's following Peter wherever he goes, even to detention.
2. She memorized what clubs he dropped out of.
3. Random places where there's Peter, there's also MJ teasing him.
4. Whenever Peter storms out of any place, there's always a shot of MJ wondering where he goes.
5. In FFH, Peter says he has caught MJ staring at him many times, and starts to ponder and like her back
6. The moments in FFH when MJ keeps trying to talk to Peter (the VPN thing, the 'BOH' thing, her excitement when Peter asks her out)
7. As she said at the end of Far from Home, she's not lucky in terms of getting close to people, shes afraid getting close to Peter, things would get worse the way she predicted it

They wouldn't put shots of MJ staring at Peter and pop up with Peter in random places if MJ doesn't have a crush on him. Otherwise her character in Homecoming would be useless.
I love this version of spidey romance. The girl crushing on first, it's rare.

MJ in homecoming is actually quite a realistic portrayal of what many people who are attracted to someone but don't expect to attract that person back or are too shy to express it behave like- they stick around that person most of the time but act like they dislike or don't care about the person in order to give an impression that they are DEFINITELY not attracted 😄
