In the wake of Toyota's recent unveiling of the all-new Prius plug-in hybrid (PHEV), the automaker has provided further information regarding the fifth generation of its hybrid model. Midway through 2023, Toyota plans to launch the all-new Prius PHEV in Europe.
The new plug-in hybrid Prius is driven by a 2.0-liter Dynamic Force Engine combined with an electric motor to give a total system output of 223 horsepower. This is accomplished through the use of an electric motor. Because of the increase in production, it only takes the Prius 6.7 seconds to go from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (compared to the 11.1 seconds before). Toyota claims that the new Prius is just as fuel efficient as the previous model, which had a 1.8-liter engine, despite the new model having a more significant engine displacement.
It has also come to light that the battery pack used in the Prius PHEV powertrain is a brand-new lithium-ion unit with a capacity of 13.6 kWh. The battery pack has cells with a better energy density to optimize the packaging, and it has become small enough to be installed underneath the seat of the back passenger.
In addition to lowering the vehicle's center of gravity, the new lithium-ion battery pack gives the Prius an EV range of 69 kilometers. This represents a fifty percent increase in the pure EV range compared to the 40 to 50 kilometers model from the previous generation provided. In addition to that, there is a solar roof that can be used to create electric power while on the go.
Toyota asserts that it is capable of generating up to eight kilometers of electric vehicle range daily. Even after being parked for several days, it can still fully charge the vehicle's battery. Additional information regarding Prius's dimensions was also made public. Compared to the previous model, it has a wheelbase that is 50 mm longer, 50 mm lower, 22 mm wider, and 46 mm shorter. Wheels as large as 19 inches can be had on the latest generation of the Prius.
The all-new Prius has a cabin constructed on the new Island Architecture framework. This allows for a roomy and uncluttered interior as the cabin is divided into three zones: surroundings, a driver module, and a floating instrument panel. A TFT LCD monitor with a seven-inch screen is located in front of the driver. The illumination of the instrument panel is connected to the messages received from the driver assistance system known as Toyota Safety Sense. The alerts are projected in a variety of colors.
Regarding safety, the Toyota Prius now comes equipped with an improved front camera as part of its Toyota Safety Sense package. This camera now has twice the forward detection capabilities of its predecessor, in addition to a broader lateral and vertical vision. Because of this, the camera can detect items in the immediate area sooner while also recognizing a wider variety of possible risks, such as objects found along the side of the road. To support the pre-collision system, lane tracing assists, and front cross-traffic alert functions, radar sensors have also been installed on the front side area of the vehicle.
Because of the increased detection range, pre-collision notifications now encompass motorcycles and incoming cars and improved pedestrian and vehicle avoidance.
