How I Find Scenic RV Boondocking Campsites in the US Southwest

One of the most common questions I get online is - “How do you find those gorgeous southwest desert boondocking locations you visit?”

I wish there was a simple answer, but the fact of the matter is it takes a fair bit of research. There isn’t one all-encompassing site or database to send folks to.

Since the question arises so often, I’ve decided to publish this blog post detailing the various methods and information sources I’ve used.

Ray my heart becomes warm when you reach AZ, knowing you are hear and everything is safe. Your winter travels are my favorite. I live through yours and Ann’s eyes so maybe one day I can Rv travel. Enjoy your post and blogs. Southeast AZ resident.

Ray, I have followed your channel for a couple of years (and have really enjoyed your content). I am curious, having never boondocked before, how safe has your experience been. Have you ever had a fear of someone with bad intentions approach you while out in the desert? You certainly have provided some fantastic views for us to enjoy.

I've always wanted to go see those giant cactus. Gotta retire first. Few years.

Great info ! You laid out a lot of good methods & resources. As you stated, if I may paraphrase, you gotta do a little homework. We employ a lot of the items you mentioned. Talking to fellow campers at sites is usually a good thing. Many years ago I blindly went down a single lane gravel & dirt road for a couple of miles. Came to a dead end. Backing skills got a little workout. Since then I tend to do a little homework first.

Great content and resources. Given that you travel relatively close to the southern boarder with Mexico, have you ever encountered anyone who may have crossed the boarder seeking a ride, water etc. If so how have you dealt with this situation?
