Coffee Is Doing MORE Than Just STAINING Your Teeth ☕️🦷

Let's talk about all the damage coffee can do to our mouth such as tooth stain, bad breath, and enamel erosion!

Our teeth are naturally porous. They’re covered in thousands of tiny little holes (“tubules”) that house nerve tissues. As a result, those tiny tubules gradually tend to collect bacteria and stain particles from the foods and drinks that we consume. Darker foods = more stain. More stain = darker teeth. And since liquids can easily flow just about anywhere, they tend to stain your teeth more than chewing something like blueberries or a dish with curry in it. Plus, we just tend to consume coffee on a consistent basis.

Coffee is something that – if you drink it – most people consume every single day and up to a few times a day. And since it’s such a dark liquid, coffee stains teeth over time. Depending on the extent of your tooth stain, it’s possible to prevent and/or get rid of staining (to an extent.) But first, you need to understand Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic stain. Extrinsic stains – like coffee stains – are surface stains on the outside of your tooth structure.

On the other hand, intrinsic stains are those that have soaked into the tubules and overall tooth enamel, making them “inside” stains (so to speak.) Intrinsic stains can also form while your teeth are developing, as a result of anatomical changes or excess minerals in your diet. When coffee stains are still extrinsic, they’re easier to clean off. But intrinsic stains are harder to get rid of.

I can't avoid coffee, even after my dentist cleaned my coffee-stained teeth and send me back home with a piece of advice "skip coffee for two days". However, your insightful teaching "water after coffee" gave me relief. Thank you so much and love your videos. Fili from Ethiopia.

The video I was waiting for Whitney 🥰🦷 Ihad perfect teeth, visit dentist 2x year and brush twice daily before I damaged my enamel sipping half a pot of coffee with half and half until lunch and eating chocolate covered espresso beans (the worst!) and sipping tea rest of day.I permanently stained my dentin. I had two cleanings, got an Oral B electric toothbrush from my dentist, drink my coffee (not sip) brush and no more after that. also toothbrush at work, floss, and mouthwash. Dentin still stained but no more eating espresso beans!! Teeth are sooo much betterI I just love your channel.🦷

Coffee bad breath ruined my life for over 20 years. Now at 36, I'm quitting coffee for good. With better oral care including religiously brushing and flossing, I can feel that my breath improved and the coffee stain on my teeth is starting to reduce.

This is informative and helpful. Thank you! I generally try my best to chew gum and/or swish water around my mouth after drinking coffee, but I do slack at times. I'm going to try to stay as consistent from now on. Our teeth are strong, but they're also delicate at the same time.

I’ve heard from my friend (who is a dentist) to drink my coffee from a straw— but I just can’t! I don’t really drink my first coffee in the morning for the coffee so much as a ritual to tell myself it’s time to work.

That being said, extra noted to drink water after/during my coffee sips to make sure it doesn’t sit on my teeth for too long. Thanks!❤️🦷✨!!

I learned about not brushing teeth immediately after drinking coffee from some other videos of yours. I used to always. Alas for my enamel. Now I water pik after coffee instead, and always drink water.

I've just accepted stained teeth as part of my life now. I love too many staining foods too much to give them up. My coffees and curries and berries and purple veggies and red wines and dark beers and everything tomato. Maybe someday I'll try whitening.

I do wonder if cream/milk in the coffee/tea reduce staining of the teeth at all. It does seem to stain the cups less.

So basically modern life is bad for your teeth and overall health.

Coffee varies in how acidic it is. Most traditional Asian and South American roasting methods produce much less acidic coffee, using a slower roasting process or special processing. There are some brands of coffee roasted specifically to be lower in acid, sold in the US market. However, Americans tend to like very "bright", acidic coffee.

If loving coffee is wrong, I don't want to be right. That said, rinsing right after drinking it is a great habit to form. I use my waterpik after every meal and most drinks. I have great checkups. Regular cleanings every 3 months is also very important.

Thanks Whitney. Love your videos. So many people are coffee drinkers. Could you do a similar video for us tea drinkers? I want to believe that tea is better for my teeth than coffee, but that's mostly wishful thinking as I don't know the facts. Also, I drink green tea, not black tea, and I want to believe that green is better, especially because I don't add sugar or milk. What is the truth?
