Inflammation of acne blemishes can leave behind scars. There are different types of acne scars and based on them, the treatment options are decided.
Types of Acne Scars & their treatments
1. Flat Area of Pigmentation:
These are the most common types of acne scars. They appear as tiny brown spots on the skin and are majorly present in the cheek area but can also be found on the chin & forehead area.
Treatment: The dermatologist prescribes ointments and creams to heal the spots.
Other treatments include- chemical peels or microdermabrasion
2. Box Scars:
These Acne scars appear as holes or craters on the skin. Due to loss of collagen & elastin; a depression is formed on the skin.
Treatment: These scars need proper dermatologist consultation. Treatments for such scars are done to encourage formation of collagen in the skin. These include: Micro-needling, Micro-needling Radio Frequency or Fractionated Laser Treatment.
3. Ice Pick Scars:
They are tiny holes in the skin and look like open pores to the common eye. These are larger and deeper than normal pores.
Treatments: Laser micro-needling can be done. The best option for such scar is Chemical Cautery Procedure. These require multiple sessions.
4. Hypertrophic Scars:
Hypertrophic Scars are the least common type of acne scars. These look like smooth and rounded elevations on the skin. They appear on the chin, back, Shoulders, upper arms and chest areas.
Treatment: Steroid creams can be used to treat them or steroid injections can be used.
Acne Scars can be a challenge to treat. Remember to treat pimples in its initial stage to prevent acne scars.
