Hey Everyone! Thank you for joining me for another video. In this video we are going to tackle kennel cough. I go over what the pet owner sees at home, how the vet with diagnose kennel cough and how it is usually treated. I hope this helps!

As a veterinarian I see a lot of kennel cough. Kennel cough can be very mild to very serious. A mild kennel cough will be a mild nagging cough. With the more serious kennel cases a doggy will cough so intensely that most owners worry that their dog may have something stuck in their throat.

A veterinarian will do a completely physical followed by possible lab work or an x-ray if they are worried about bronchitis or pneumonia outside of the kennel cough. Some veterinarians may even get a culture of a dog's upper airway to diagnose kennel cough or bordetella bronchispectica.

Once a diagnosis of kennel cough has been confirmed, antibiotics will most likely be given with an anti cough medication.

My dog got kennel cough just a few days after being in the kennel for a single night. She was up to date on her bordetella vaccine and still got it. She was normal except for persistent dry heaving. Vet prescribed antibiotics and a cough suppressant as described in this video.

What if it's been more than 2 weeks? I first noticed my 10-year-old shepherd choking/gagging after drinking water, sometimes spitting up a little bit of water. But then he'll sometimes also "cough, cough, and gag" (as you say), when he's just sitting there. He sounds like an old man. Or he'll cough like he's got something stuck in his throat, and nothing will come out. I've been giving him Manuka honey, as well as propolis to see if it will help, but he still does it. Btw, I have 2 other dogs, and they are not coughing. Plus, he is not exposed to other dogs. He's been home with me and my 3 dogs, just going out in the yard a few times a day.

Hi! we boarded our Blue heeler when we went on vacation. when we came back he stunned, and was super anxious afterwards, when he pooped he pooped out hair a it was a tad red in it. the next day he started the cough cough gag, at first he got white foamy stuff and then he started to spit up way more then that. we thought he was doing better but know he is doing it again

My dog was vaccinated and contracted kennel cough AND he is just here with me at home and we don't go around other dogs.. He has a pretty bad case but he has preexisting conditions. Honey has been a Godsend along with the antibiotics and Prednisone.

Love this. Straight to the point! I suspected one of my dogs had kennel cough, she had all the symptoms, sounded like a cross between a seal and goose. I rang the vet for advice, saying I wasn't that worried because said doggo was still eating and cheerful. My vet said it was probably bronchitis. I suggested kennel cough and she responded with "OH MY GOD; I HOPE NOT!!!" I said, yeah, but it's often not that serious, is it, especially in a young, otherwise healthy dog? This particular dog isn't up to date with her vaccines, but she had them as a pup and for a couple of years, so presumably has some cover still. When I mentioned that she was vaccinated as a pup, she said, "Ah but, the vaccine is very particular", like I'm some kind of idiot. Anyway, she told me to keep her under observation and she's now on the mend. Meantime, my other dog has started coughing... Looks like it is kennel cough after all. I'm trying to keep antibiotics at a minimum if I can and treating with honey, steam and cbd oil. I'll see how it goes! Dog number 1 shook it off in 2 or 3 days give or take the odd honk. Dog 2 is older but otherwise healthy.

My dog sounds like she’s struggling to take in breaths (kind of like what you described kennel cough to sound like) it’s been occurring regularly at night and in the morning sometimes in the afternoon. She doesn’t have a lost of appetite or energy. Would this be a mild case of Kennel cough?

How do I know if my dog has kennel cough or pneumonia? He’s been coughing here and there for a few months and I thought it was just allergies. We had a road trip for 10 hours yesterday and he was drinking water in the car very fast and he started coughing. Three hours later when we got home, he ate like normal and started coughing more but with white mucus five hours ago and he hasn’t stopped.
