As a traditional artist I have been struggling with this a lot, the absence of textures took a time to comprehend. I'll definitely try this!

Using your term “over-described “ is such a good way to put that issue.

That's very helpful. I've only started doing sketches on a graphics tablet and it's not easy to find brushes and settings that feel comfortable. This short helped with that, so thank you! 😊

YES! This has been an issue for me to such a degree I completely changed my process to something more like silhouetting; which has worked - but for years my strength was my draftmanship so, while I love digital, its felt like I've taken a step back at times in terms of progress. Excited to see what other tips you have, couldnt slap the sub button quick enough.

Personally I like the digital look, the pencil imitation just fucks with my brain in all the wrong ways. It looks so uncanny because of how accurate it is. Also I feel like the digital look fits my comic book inspired art style.

I’ve tried a couple tablets to get into digital but always felt off. Thank you for the advice!

Subjectively & personally, I don’t like the pencil tool. It just doesn’t feel like the finished line art you’d see in rendered, colored pieces to me. (Which, yeah, it’s meant to be sketchy)

What I’ve enjoyed more is simply having thinner lines and emphasizing the line art less to give more room for the color to define form.

Another thing I’ve seen and liked is to not use black as your inking line but a darker color of whatever your coloring (dark brown for brown hair; a dark blue for a blue jacket). This works both for cartoons and more cell shaded works

About 20 years ago I bought a graphics tablet and used it in plain old photoshop. To achieve the effect you describe, I simply turned on the option so that the pressure of the pen determined the intensity of the color. unless this is advice for people who draw with a mouse ;)

That is such a good way to describe it

Will this work when drawing digitally using finger instead of pen?

Yeah! I love using this sort of brush it’s like a hair brush for me. Solid lineart for simple designs works, but a lot of the time I just don’t like the way it looks on my other pieces.

Please what software do you use
I love your tutorials
You are a master

My solution as someone who uses a mouse is to almost entirely abandon line-art and focus on the silhouette - I then carve in the details with color and shading, without ever having to draw a single line.

Hey, I've been liking your tutorials for a pretty long time. I really like how you simplify things. I wanted to know if you can give your opinion on art colleges? Like if they're worth it or not. You are way more older and experienced than me and I'm basically looking for a little guidance for my future. Thanks.

How would you do this on clipstudiopaint? Would it be with brush density?
