I've always done this. What's weird is everyone seems to make the game overly bright. Like, no shit, your whole game looks washed out and your nights look like the day. Almost like you're purposefully making the game look worse.

The calibration screen at the start is ignored by majority of players but it does make a difference in many games

It's an illusion. It looks better because we love contrast, and when you turn the brightness way down, the shadows are very dark compared to the sunlight.

You should always do this for games. Every game asks you to adjust brightness based on an image or something. Here, you can notice that first, there was no black in the brightness scale. The darkest was a medium dark grey. Therefore that is the darkest it would display. That is not how it should be. Moral of the story, brighter is not better. Also change your tv display from dynamic or standard to Warm1, Warm2 or Filmmaker mode, depending on your usage. It will be less brighter, but it is how it should look. Colours will look not look washed out as in dynamic or standard, will have mych more depth and will look natural.
