Avoid THIS Triceps Exercise? ❌

Are overhead dumbbell extensions the worst triceps exercise to include in your arm workouts? I'd say that's an exaggeration, however it is true that this is not optimal when it comes to your triceps workouts. That's because the optimal path for the triceps is to extend away from the midline of the body whereas with this arm exercise the weight is moving in a straight vertical line. If you want to build bigger triceps (and bigger arms in general), this is best done with a single dumbbell or a cable. All of these variations will work to build triceps muscle, but the latter two would be optimal.

Heads up, if you really love doing some exercise that is technically "not optimal", there's no reason to remove it from your workout. One of the main aspects of working out is the motivation and if you start removing everything that you love about your workouts, you'll lose that drive. Of course, there's a limit to this (please don't do weightless arm raises lol) but I'd say it's generally a good approach to fitness.

Skull curshers into a superset of close grip bench press with an ez bar is my go to combo for thick triceps

Nice, I've been doing this exercise with both arms because it was what I had available at home and wasn't seeing that much progress, thanks for the tip of one arm at a time, I'll def try it

I love this exercise as it's kind on my shoulders, doing it one hand and on cable just aches my shoulders.. also if you control the weight you can really feel triceps working and getting that stretch

This used to be my favorite tricep exercise in my early twenties. I was using 105lb dumbell and it felt great, felt really strong with this lift. I had to stop because it aggravated my elbows. I tried it again a few years ago since the tricep extension machine wasn’t available and it caused permanent damage to my right elbow which I’m always feeling now and have to focus on when deloading.
