The ship size conundrum.
The original ship design brief in the unaired pilot episode called for a one level transport vessel. They were never supposed to live in it. The Gemini 12(renamed Jupiter 2) was delivered by Bill Creber. The lift off features that original one level vessel.
The network approved the pilot episode and gave it a series order but demanded changes. The addition of the robot, Dr Smith and that they would live on the ship.
This would essentially mean a complete redesign of the ship to something entirely different.
Instead, the design was just tinkered with only slightly but it would never really be believable unless you tripled the size to give it a second level.
That would then be problematic for an aesthetically pleasing studio set where the majority of the series would be set.
Even as a one level ship, the Chariot is a big stretch. I do not think the ship designer was involved in the chariot design and it's not his fault that is didn't conform to his ship design dimensions. As we know, they didn't bother with accuracy and just went with their imagination.

As a 6-year-old, I was absolutely ENTRANCED by those scenes of the Jupiter 2 crash-landing among the mountains of an alien world! Still impressive today, nearly 60 years later! John Williams' score was brilliant!

The Jupiter 2 back in the mid 60s was, bar none, the greatest ship ever to grace film. It remains so. The highlights of "Lost In Space" were when the Jupiter 2 was in motion.

I loved this ship. I built a dozen Jupiter 2s out of paper plates. They had working hatches, actual windows, interiors, working landing gear, and a dockable space pod.

Not bad for an eight-year old.

It takes me back to when I was a boy, wishing that I could be Will Robinson. There was a positive feeling back then that we've lost.

As a 12 year old back in 1965, I was absolutely enthralled by everying in LIS. Especially the first season. The Jupiter II was unique and spectacular--both inside and outside. The oh-so-cool sounds of the engines, and the fantastic shots of it swooping down over the mountains of the alien planet. So I really appreciate this video! And the ending was so sweet!

Those Wednesday nights at 7:30 in 1965 and 1966 were the most magical times of the week.

Obviously a 'labour-of-love'; this was a pleasure to watch and an 'experience'.

Some of that early John Williams music / score work holds up so well today (like most of his work) Truly a time capsule from my childhood, LOVED this show.

I was always amazed as to what they could fit inside that ship.

I watched this as a kid in the early 70's. I had to chuckle at the aluminum foil meteor swarm and just grin and bear the campiness of it all for nostalgic purposes. Then, it came to the end with the clips of the production crew. Someone put a lot of time, love, and energy into making this campy show so that a kid like me would be well entertained all the way to his 50's...
