Here’s why I appreciate fundamentalists…

Transcription:

One of the hardest lessons I've had to learn coming out of fundamentalism is that it's important that I accept and appreciate fundamentalism. 'Cause if I don't, I'm just a new brand of fundamentalists. And by fundamentalism, I don't mean strictly the religious sect. I mean the personality type, because first and foremost, fundamentalism isn't religious. It's how we think about the world. Are we black and white? Are we hyper-confident? That's a type of person, that's not religious. If I can't appreciate that those type of people exist, I'm just a new version of black and white. This isn't fake appreciation. This is genuine appreciation because that type of person matters. There would be no activists if there was no fundamentalistic types of people.

The world changes because of fundamentalists, not because of wishy washy people like me. I'm glad people like me exist. I'm glad people who are much more confident, whether they're right or not, exist. I am not a fundamentalist, and in order to be unfundamentalistic, I am happy that they're fundamentalists. Even if they don't feel the same way?

"Even if they don't feel the same way." :D

Hopefully more and more fundamentalists will be steered more and more toward healthy and non-damaging outlets for it as they're exposed to more points of views.

I'm that type of person to a degree, and I try to be careful to actively aim to keep an open mind to ensure that I don't go too far with it in unhealthy ways.

Activism does not come from black and white thinking, it comes from caring about real harm that others are not acting to prevent.

I really like this. I have a tendency to see things in context with lots of shades of grey. But I didnt begin to really grow as a person until I began adhering to a few fundamental ethical maxims. Its important to have a moral compass that you refer back to consistently and not wade through life in a Postmodern fog.

This is a great video and I agree with what you are saying. At the same time, I'm terribly distracted by whatever you're looking at out the window. It's not just a general pensive look, either. It's like there's something going on outside and it keeps forcing you to look at it. Perhaps some sort of construction or other unaccustomed activity? You don't look worried or concerned about it, it's just hijacking your eyes now and then. Fascinating.

That’s a fascinating take on it. You really do have to think about it that way, and with that mindset we can apply a kind of appreciation to other things as well that served similar purposes

Pertaining to religion, or the lack thereof....
I've found that religion divides people. Spirituality unites them.
My Dad was a Preacher, and I found it hard to believe the same way he did. I found my own path, and I'm a much happier human.

Hmm...fundamentalists feel sure and like they are on solid ground? Hmm...something to think about. It SOUNDS right.

This is very confusing. This is very confusing I have no idea why I'm repeating myself or why I'm so confused. But maybe I'm not Fundamentalist enough

I'm very skeptical of your claim that the world changes because of fundamentalism. Can you give an example?

From my view, fundamentalistic activism for good causes isn't conducive to building an inclusive movement. It can end up reinforcing the systems that cause harm, maybe exacerbating the problem.

I have an example in mind, but would like to hear yours, because I'm not following your reasoning.

I think I’m actually a fundamentalist….but I appreciate you too lol
I think it’s important to question things every once in a while and make sure they are still benefiting (or at least not harming) individuals and society as a whole. Otherwise…it wouldn’t be a good fundamental…thing

Fundamentalism isn't what you define it as.
You are confusing it with Dedication, Optimism and Determination.
Blind Optimism is very dangerous.

I don't really agree with this definition of "fundamentalist." I think the term means more than just "strong in one's convictions;" though exactly what is harder to define.
