I got a small mole on my finger tip after a few years of having gels. Absolutely freaked me out as I’m already at risk of skin cancer (fair skin and a childhood of severe burning). The salon (nationwide trusted name) told me of course there’s no risk from uv and basically gaslighted me into thinking I was nuts for even asking. I got it checked and not cancerous but honestly I’ve avoided gel nails since. Not worth the risk

Dr. Daniel Sugai did a short on this as well. He mentioned that LED lamps are more popular than the old UV lamps to cut down on the risk. But supposedly the damage occurred when the exposure was done three days in a row at 20 minutes each time.

I wear uv gloves with no finger tips. Easy fix and no worries. I do my nails at home so it’s really no inconvenience either.

I LOVE your short subject videos. I don’t always have time for a 30 minute video.

I know that the recent research was surprising to many dermatologists as to the damage that was caused, even with using led lights, in lab tests. I’ve done gel nails using an led lamp for years, but honestly, since reading up on the new data, will be stopping and switching to dip powders. And wearing gloves protects everything above the glove, but does nothing to the nail plate and any uncovered areas.

I love that you bring this up! In my experience, most nail salons use LED lamps because they cure the polish much faster. Generally speaking, if you're under the lamp for 1-2 minutes it's probably a UV lamp, but if it's under a minute, it's probably LED. I hope this helps!

Thank you very much for talking about this, hopefully there will be updates anytime soon because I was looking for this topic for such a long time. I also do my nails at home with the tipless gloves and it works quite well. If you really want to make sure to stay protected, you might also take a SPF50 lip balm and apply it anywhere needed on the fingertips. But do not get any of the balm on the nails, it might interfere with the acrylic or gel sticking propely to the natural nail.

Put sunscreen on your hands before the visit. Some will rub off but it's better

I went to school for nail and my teacher had said that get skin cancer from getting your nails done is not true, that their was extensive studies done. Also as a former nail tech the salon use
LED lamps not UV.

I know a lot of places now like to put sunscreen on your hands before they put them under the light too!

I believe that it outdated damage cells. My nail beds hurt when they are under the lamps. I don’t use that polish anymore.
