Thanks Les for the simple important lesson. I learned a leverage knot up in Northern MN, back around 85, from a state trooper who pulled us over for not having our canoe properly tied down on my friends Subaru station wagon. That officer saved our butts. The things you learn in your early twenties. Bless

I would love to see more knot videos like this, I know very little about them.

That's very similar to the taut line hitch, my favorite and only knot for tarp setup. I finish every tarp knot with a quick release because it really saves a heap of time, and if I'm concerned it might be pulled by accident I'll lock it off like a shoelace. But there's nothing worse than trying to undo a knot that isn't quick release with frozen hands.

Taughtline hitch. I find myself using a trucker's hitch a lot if I need to tighten a line.

Very similar to the “adjustable grip hitch”.

Perhaps a better choice might be the Farrimond's Friction Hitch. As easy to tie, but much easier to untie. Check it out.

Oooohhh cool! Its like a half-prussic!
Thats much faster than a truckers hitch too (which I have used a lot)!

I use very similar knot called an Adjustable Grip Hitch. Works very well. Other similar knots are Taut Line Hitch and the Magnus Hitch.

It's a great knot that I've used for years (thanks to a prior video of this he posted) for my hammock tarp ridge line. Quick, simple, and adjustable. I have everything hung within a few minutes.

nice - many are the knots in this 'family' of adjusting loops

Dear Sir,
Straight to the point, get your film crew and your survival forest skills into the Pacific northwest mixed with, Steve Isdahl
from How To Hunt with an academic and look for evidence of the sasquatch on long expeditions... You would be a world sensation. We love your integrity and open mind.

Sincerely

I think its a half hitch to finish.. Nice alternative to the truckers hitch if some adjustment is desired, thanks.

Interesting! I've always used the adjustable grip hitch. Does this know have any other names? Is it in Ashley's Book of Knots?

Excellent demonstration Les . You made it very easy to see how to tie the Bill Mason Knot .
I will be using this simple knot from now on in order to hang a tarp over my tent on those stormy days out in the wilderness .
The Bill Mason Knot allows you to secure the rope ( you have attached to your tarp ) to nearby trees without having to stick your face inside the tree .
The bonus feature about the knot, as you have described, is that you can re-adjust the tautness of the rope without having to climb inside a tree
to re-tie the knot because the knot will be located a few feet away from the crown of the tree . And you will need to re-adjust the tautness of the rope
because the rope always slackens after a day of wind or rain . Using this knot to secure a tarp to trees will minimize the number of times
I will end up with abrasions to my skin or to my eyeballs caused by tree branches . Thanks for the tip Les . Peace to you … Miles from Prince Edward County .
