Huge fan of these, they were the first ferro rods I ever had. I'm very partial t ok saving the magnesium for wet or super cold weather, and j tend to angle mg striker across the ferrocerium and the magnesium to beef up my sparks with bits of hot mag. As a side note, I use surplus military snowshoes, the frames are magnesium and you can shave them to assist in firecraft

I attach a 1/4 hack saw blade as a striker, saves my knife edge and gives me an extra notch saw. Only get the Doan (US Military) magnessium bar, same price as the Harbod Freight & Walmart versions, but it actually works. That's why it's carried by military and air crews in survival kits. Can keep with extra petroleum jellycotton balls, fat wood, etc in a better fire kit.

I remember watching this a long time ago and thinking it was great. In retrospect in dry conditions like this the striker alone is plenty enough to ignite dry grass way faster. The magnesium is a disadvantage unless you're trying to light wet tinder.

Learning how to do it as we speak. Wow these catch a massive spark and flame up but as you said, it’s so, so. So fast. Have to have the tinder like you show for sure. I tried to have it close (4”) and even that was too far. Ty for these videos.

The magnesium burnt a lot faster than I expected...
I’ll stick with my preferred Spark-Lite Fire Starter and waxed tinder 🙂

You can buy one of those for just 2 or 3 bucks, Can be a pain for sure, The little scrapper/ hack saw blade works ok, But knife works better, One also must consider your going to dull your knife

So... this is a look at the full sequence where you show how to use the magnesium striker, certainly a very interesting and quite cool way of starting a fire. Uploading this withoud actual cuts is pretty neat. And also, this HD remaster is much better than the one you did with the full episodes from Season 1 that you uploaded here. The only thing left to do here is to preserve the aspect ratio. Stretching the 4:3 image to 16:9 really isn't necessary.

These are great. Especially because you can buy a five pack for about five bucks. Throw one in your vehicles. Put one in your tacklebox. Toss one in your different hunting packs. Never know when it might save you some trouble.

I bought 4 of them this morning at Walmart and gave it a shot when I got home. Mine came with a little hacksaw blade attached, but was coated in thick paint and wouldn't do anything. I just went and made my own out of another hacksaw blade I had in my shop. It was easy for me to use the smooth end of the blade to get shavings off the Magnesium. I just pulled in and down with the blade and got big curly shavings each time and took about 20 seconds to get what I needed. Used the smooth side again on the blade to strike the flint and low and behold it actually worked!

Now I am curious to see what the whole mag stick and flint would do if I threw it in a fire, lol
