This is actually one of the earliest traditions of the church as it relates to baptism. When someone was brought into the church no matter the age, you needed someone to vouch for you (sponsor). Godparents are just sponsors for those babies. The Godparents are able to be witnesses for the children, and they promise to be there to help guide the children in the true faith. Just as a sponsor wouldn’t just drop communication with an adult convert.
