Spider crabs belong to the family Majoidea, a superfamily containing various species known for their long, spindly legs and smaller, rounded bodies, giving them a spider-like appearance. Here's some information about them:

Key Characteristics:

Appearance: They have relatively small, pear-shaped or triangular bodies (carapace) and long, slender legs. Some species have bumpy shells, and many have hooked hairs that they use for camouflage.
Size: Size varies greatly among species. The Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) is the largest living arthropod, with a leg span that can reach up to 3.7 meters (12 feet). Other spider crab species are much smaller, with carapaces only a few centimeters wide and leg spans around a foot.
Legs: They typically have ten legs: eight walking legs and two claws (chelipeds). In males of some species, like the Japanese spider crab, the claws can be significantly longer than their walking legs.
Movement: Unlike many other crabs, some spider crabs can walk forward as well as sideways. They generally move slowly and deliberately.
Camouflage: Many spider crabs are known as "decorator crabs" because they often attach algae, sponges, shells, and other debris to their shells for camouflage against predators.
Habitat and Distribution:

Spider crabs are found in oceans worldwide, from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea.
The Japanese spider crab lives in the Pacific Ocean around Japan, typically at depths of 50 to 600 meters (160 to 1, 970 feet), favoring vents and holes on the ocean floor. Younger crabs are found in shallower, warmer waters.
Other species inhabit a variety of seafloor environments, including sandy, rocky bottoms, bays, estuaries, and shorelines. For example, the common spider crab (Libinia emarginata) is found along the east coast of North America.
Diet:

Most spider crabs are omnivorous scavengers.
Their diet includes dead and decaying organisms, algae, mollusks, crustaceans, and other small invertebrates.
Some species are known to actively prey on slow-moving animals like sea stars, while others scrape algae from the ocean floor or pry open shellfish.
Life Cycle and Behavior:

Female spider crabs carry fertilized eggs attached to their abdominal appendages until they hatch into planktonic larvae.
The larvae go through several developmental stages before metamorphosing into juvenile crabs.
Japanese spider crabs are thought to live for a long time, possibly 50 to 100 years. Their legs continue to grow even after they reach adulthood, while their carapace remains the same size.
Some species, like those found in the Great Southern Reef off Australia, gather in large numbers for mass molting, a vulnerable period when they shed their old shells to grow. This aggregation provides safety in numbers.
Major Groups and Examples:

The superfamily Majoidea contains several families of spider crabs, including:
Majidae: Often referred to as the "true" spider crabs, including the European spider crab (Maja squinado).
Inachidae: Includes the Japanese spider crab (Macrocheira kaempferi) and the slender-legged spider crab (Macropodia rostrata).
Epialtidae
Mithracidae
Oregoniidae
Inachoididae
Spider crabs are a diverse and fascinating group of crustaceans with unique adaptations and life histories!
