It’s the rats instinct to play dead . It’s a survival mechanism. That’s was so traumatizing for the rat . He knew that was it . Very sad

For the people freaking out about the rats heart beating… the owner of the snake most likely did what we call “stunning” the rat. It makes it safer for the snake to eat because the rat will be knocked out essentially and can’t bite the snake, but it also saves the rat from being conscious while being constricted or envenomated for those like myself who also keep venomous. I personally use frozen thawed but not all snakes will eat that way, so you gotta do what you gotta do. Snakes gotta eat.

Rats are not my favourite creatures, but seeing that heart beat😢 I couldn't put that animal through that. He didn't give it a fighting chance. May that soul rest in peace.

The rat was still conscious enough to try to grip the floor but obviously stunned and in pain with labored breathing. I understand wanting to protect your snake from the damage a rat can inflict but that's no excuse for clobbering the rat before dangling it in front of your snake. That's messed up. Rats deserve humane treatment even if they're just food. Disclaimer: I'm not a vegan and I've had a ball python of my own for 12 years.
