Re: Tipping the servers at restaurants.
Yes, in America employers are legally allowed to underpay their wait staff *because it’s assumed they’ll make up the rest in tips.*
It’s a shitty system, but it is what it is.
Assuming it doesn’t change when the lockdown is over, please tip your servers when you get the chance to visit our country again. Allow them to pay their rent and put food in their fridge.

American here. I slipped and broke my ankle earlier this year requiring an ambulance ride and surgery. Even with what is considered good health insurance in the US, I still had to pay over $3000 out of my own pocket.

0:27 - Actually, most English speaking countries use feet as a unit of measurement. Fahrenheit is rarer outside the USA.

I went on vacation to the States a couple of years ago and these were the unique things I noticed (but feel free to correct me if anything's wrong):

- Saying "state" rather than "province"

- Specifying provinces/states when naming cities ("I live in Austin, Texas"; "I was born in Miami, Florida"), or simply naming the state/province instead of the city, with the exception of famous cities like New York or Los Angeles

- Extremely powerful airconditioning in every building when it's warm outside

- cars are big and cheap; fuel is also cheap

- Large portion sizes, especially beverages (not to mention the free refills!)

- Restaurants telling you how much to tip

- greeting people by asking how they are, even complete strangers

- Flags, flags and more flags! American flags everywhere, even when there's nothing to celebrate

The allergies one is mostly because nowadays parents tend to overprotect their kids, not allowing them to build resistance/tollerance.

I think it’s weird that Europeans talk about how barbaric it is that maternity leave isn’t a thing in the states w/o recognizing the reality of why it is that way.

Most European countries have flat or declining growth rates. They enacted generous maternity and paternity leave laws so to try to counteract that downward trend. USA population is stable. There’s always more immigrants who want into the country. There’s no need for those laws to exist beyond a feel good sense. But that’s the reality we live in.

is it just me or as an American does it seem like everyone that criticizes us thinks that their country is perfect? like we get it our government is fucked and so are many of our laws and education systems. you don't have to brag and bitch about how better you have it. it gets annoying sometimes because rather than directing what they say to the government or school systems etc. they get mad at the citizens. not cool :(
