The 777X Failure JUST GOT WORSE - Boeing Is Losing Everything!

After postponing the 777X for almost 5 years, things just got a lot worse.
During August flight tests, engineers found cracked thrust links, which are responsible for holding the engine to the aircraft’s body. The test fleet was immediately grounded and customers got angry.
Some say this is the end for Boeing, while others claim they have one more chance to prove that Boeing delivers good planes.

If safety culture is gone, the company is gone. For ever.

Boeing should not have “merged” with McDonnell Douglas.

One thing Boeing is good at, is how to admit defeat. Usually hundreds of people die first.

Thrust link damage is serious. I’ve replaced a few in older airplanes that had one made of aluminum for new ones made of titanium. If the thrust link fails, the engine will separate, as the cone bolts that hold the engine, are not designed to tolerate those shear loads. Airbus probably doesn’t like this either because they can’t even meet the market. The industry needs a third player, and needed it 5 years ago.

With growing jet engines, the low-wing concept with engines under the wings is ending, as the landing gears have to become higher, and the stairs too. Either the engines will be mounted above the wings (like the HondaJet) or at the tail. In both cases, they are not as easily accessible as if they were mounted below the wings. The fuselage may also be more easily damaged in case of a disintegration. The disintegration of a tail-mounted engine once hurt the APU. The other option could be shoulder-wing concepts with pylon-mounted engines, which need increased weight to introduce weight or lift from the wings into the fuselage.

How many times will we have to see corporate greed kill off another great company before the lesson is learned? I think I know the answer……

Maybe Boeing should abandon the 777X projects, and then decide if it wants to design from scratch another widebodied aircraft, or put all its efforts into the 797 project.

I really like the 777X concept. The triple 7 is my favourite aircraft. But they really need to get it into service now. I would like to ride in one. I already rode in an A350-900.

Boeing will get the 777X certified. The question is "when" and how much over budget will it cost? How many concessions and discounts will the customers receive? On the flip side; it's impossible to move the 777X assembly outside of Everett WA.
