I've been in Taiwan for 15 years. Your points are bang on. Local Taiwanese buddies, effort in learning Chinese, and financial prudence are all extremely important for establishing yourself in Taiwan.

I think you have highlighted the important things to survive in Taiwan for long term. Saving money is the rule for every one, no matter where he lives. Have local friends and could use local language to communicate are the keys to emerse into this society.
