7 Times Dunkirk Got History All Wrong

There is no doubt that Christopher Nolan will go down as one of the greatest film directors of his time. His most recent masterpiece, the epic war film Dunkirk is a gripping tale about the Dunkirk evacuation in France during World War II.

The movie might go down as one of the most suspenseful war dramas in recent memory but just like many war movies, Nolan’s Dunkirk took some liberties when it came to the historical accuracies of the actual evacuation.

Following history perefctly often doesn’t align with creativity and entertainment. Here are 7 times Dunkirk got history all wrong.

The true heroes of Dunkirk ? .. The French soldiers who kept the Germans at bay while the evacuation took place ?

Jesus, did nobody else see that the French were at the beginning of the movie, holding the line? They were portrayed as heroic as they should have been. They were there, y'all just weren't looking.

Considering most of these 'inaccuracies' were made intentionally for the purpose of cinematography, and not relying on CGI, then it is hugely impressive how few mistakes/historical inaccuracies there are for a film of this scope!

Give a lot of credit to Nolan and crew who obviously worked tirelessly to get as much of it right as possible!

The title is very misleading!
In the video, they themselves accept the truth that the movie couldn't have been made and wouldn't have worked without changing some trivial facts. And Yes there's a name for it "Creative Freedom".

The contribution that the French made was vastly understated in the film. Without them, the evacuation would never have worked.

I sat through that whole thing, and Batman didn't show up once.

I like the fact he didn't use CGi. However I felt it could have been used to really to show the scale of the operation. The film doesn't make it look like there are 400, 000 men trapped on a beach, there looks no more than a couple of thousand. There also isn't enough boats. We only see one destroyer when they would have been 100's of navy vessels in the see at all times. One thing they got wrong was that it made it look as if the Germans were in Dunkirk town literally a street away from the beach when they were actually miles out being held off by French and British soldiers holding the line.

No honour was given to the French even though they were the ones who saved many English soldiers by protecting the city

I don't understand people complaining, this video doesn't say the movie was shit or anything, it just says that it is not perfectly fitting to history. What's wrong with you guys ? I'm happy to have seen the movie and to have heard theses few rectifications. open your minds and stop talking shit or taking position when it's not needed ! A great thank you for this video ! I will be a little less dumb and naif.

Whilst it is true that most of the "little ships" were requisitioned by the Royal Navy, it was incorrect of the video to claim these boats were then crewed by Navy hands... In most such cases, the Royal Navy only stationed one sailor on each boat to act as a coordinator and go-between, whilst the original civilian skippers and crews manned the boats and sailed to Dunkerque... So technically, this video should be called *6* things the movie got wrong, not 7.

This is a big question, do you expect a movie to be completely correct?

"Got history all wrong" ? Yeah not quite on most of these. Don't forget the spitfire takes a few shells that even knock out the fuel gauge..

The amount of nit picking looper is projecting on us is such garbage. Next will be how unrealistic "Mad Max: Fury Road" is because no one has a sun burn.

Can someone explain to me why Tom Hardy's character didn't just land in the ocean or on the beach near the allied troops so he could leave rather than landing near the Germans and getting captured?

Oh my god give Christopher Nolan a break!!! These alterations are so negligible and he came clean about them way before the release of the film so brownie points for him! I saw Dunkirk on one of the largest IMAX screens in London and the experience was bloody amazing! Although the plot is fairly simple, Nolan wraps it with such delicate and agile care that you might as well feel like you're watching 3 films at the same time (i.e. the divided operations). One word: brilliant! Just brilliant! Christopher Nolan is an international treasure! I respect him so much for his work!

Glad you mentioned the French soldiers holding off the Germans. It was a shame the movie didn't do it justice
