Did you know that In Dunkirk, the infamous smiling extra from the Dunkirk teaser was CGI to look serious/scared in the final film

I like how they chose to use CGI on one extra and not on making an entire army larger and more accurate

PTSD, or shellshock as it was still being called, can do some weird shit to a psyche. Lot of people smile when we're truly afraid, or laugh. It's a self soothing gesture.

I think it looked more haunting with that smile

I don't see why they did this. There's that picture of the "shell-shocked" (PTSD as it later came to be known) soldier in a trench smiling like he's at a party.

A lot of soldiers 'cracked' under the pressure and acted strangely, even in the hours leading up to contact. The human mind doesn't cope well with sustained fear and stress, and can come up with extremely unusual reactions in order to try to cope.

It adds to the Uncanny Valley of them being crammed in a boat to go to their very literal deaths.

It’s not CGI’d if anyones interested. This short is just edited. He’s still smiling in the film and trailers.

Nolan - CGI is lazy. I use practical effects
Extra - I’m about to end this men’s whole career

Honestly the smile seems more realistic to me. Everyone acts and reacts to combat and shitty situations differently. A lot of us us comedy and laughing to cope.

They obviously don't realize how realistic it would have been had they kept the guys smile. Someone ppl joke and others laugh in the most stressful and serious of situations. It's a coping mechanism that protects their mind from falling absolutely apart yo anxiety and stress.

i think the smiling fits better. when people are in terrible situations sometimes they can’t help but laugh at their predicament

Dunkirk was great and all with lovely practical effects, but by God that beach was way too empty

I think the best part about dunkirk is the silence
Just heartbreaking silence

Did you know when the Stukas were strafing, the bullets were real and killed most of the extras, so they put CGI to cover the dead extras with CGI extras

That's the thing though, when someone is under super intense stress smiling is one of the ways the brain tries to help cope with it.

I think it’d still be realistic if he was smiling. When I’m incredibly stressed or disturbed by something, I always tend to grin uncontrollably and giggle. When I was in 7th grade we watched a WWII documentary in my school’s auditorium, and it showed D-Day footage. When I saw it, I burst into such a fit of laughter that a teacher came over to scold me, and when I tried apologizing and saying I didn’t mean to, I was laughing too hard to get a comprehensive thought out. I had a lot of classmates shame me afterwards, but I really wasn’t trying to mock what happened, I think that laughter is just a natural reaction to shock. “Laugh lest we cry” I suppose

He’s not smiling he literally has a straight face

I dont know why but when he smiles it looks psychic like the soldier is happy that he might die and then live peacefully

I remember the day when this trailer came out. People noticed this and then bashing him for smiling.

Should’ve left it in. Seeing a plane head straight toward me, knowing quite well I’ll be littered with bullets or napalm would be funny. I’d rather die laughing than in fear

They spent their cgi budget on that instead of actually making the set look real

Men make light of oncoming death in war all the time, why would you cry if theres literally no control you have over it
