You Don't Own Your Movies, Music, Books, Games (DRM Is Evil!)

DRM stands for "Digital Rights Management" but don't let the name fool you. It does not protect users' rights but instead restricts your rights when it comes to digital media, such as: movies, music, books, games, etc. DRM restricts what you normally would (and should) be able to do with the media that you purchased. And in many ways, DRM is one of the biggest threats to freedom in the world today.

The amazing thing about DRM is that those who do pay have a worse experience than those who don't.

My wife did a deep dive on publishing her writing on Amazon & it was shocking how much control Amazon has over self published authors. As the juggernaut in the marketplace, they could wipe out your library of published works & close your regular account if you used words or themes they don't approve of. And there was nobody you could appeal to. Obviously this has a chilling effect which is made worse by their monopoly.

This is just a small example of one particular niche market. I bet this goes on at every level, in every aspect of our lives. How we've let corporations run roughshod over America is disgusting & shameful.

I agree with you 100%. I'm happy to see you speak about this. I hope people notice this and take a stand, somehow.

DRM is the reason why I still buy physical books, movies, and CD's. Streaming sites can and do remove the movies, TV shows, or music that you like and you can't do anything about it.

DRM is a nightmare that doesn’t even stop the pirates from sailing, and is only a pain to the paying consumers mostly. I once bought a Blu-ray containing both a disc and a digital version. The digital version needed yet another app to play and the service stopped existing a year or so after. They provided a way to redeem the movie on Play Movies instead, but the movie isn’t available on there in the region I live in. And the disc was a nightmare to rip since it has some stupid ‘protection’ where it has 100 different sequences of the video, of which only 1 is the right one. If you don’t get it right, your movie would either be played in the wrong order or it would miss chapters. I just wanted a digital version lol.

DRM is defective by design in all senses of the word. First, it will stop working in the future, when DRM servers stop working. Second, it is trying to simultaneously prevent and allow access, which is why all DRM can be broken (but it will take time). They are trying to "fix" this with TPM but again, it is simultaneously trying to allow and deny you access so it can be broken. DMCA is the only thing preventing sharing DRM cracks.

I agree this is a huge thing. That's why I started buying DVDs again to own the copy.

When buying things DRM-free, don't forget to also immediately make good use of your property right to those things downloading them to your hard drive. Otherwise, you're still essentially trusting the storefront that your files will be accessible forever, which is exactly what you want to avoid, and I think it's just naive to not do that.
I buy nearly all of my games on GOG, and I use a script to make regular, scheduled backups of everything I have on there to an external hard drive.

The paradox of DRM:
If you buy something - you own it legally, but don't own it factually (you're never allowed to even posses thing you "own" - you have to stream parts of it remotely and in an encrypted way).
If you don't buy it - you don't own it legally, but you do own it factually (as if it's on your hard drive, free to use, store and modify in whichever way you please)

BTW, you can share a game on Steam, but it's pretty restrictive and limited: you can't play any of the games from your library while any of your friends play games from your library. You can't just temporarily transfer ownership of the game to them like you could with a physical copy.

You're really devoted to this. I appreciate that. You even make your video license CC!

DistroTube clearly is missing a point a little bit on this. We need to differentiate 2 situations here. If I pay for a game on Steam, I pay for one particular product upfront. I should have been able to download it, burn it to a disc, share it, etc. And the fact that I'm not allowed to do that is simply pathological, that's for sure. BUT!! With subscription services like Netflix, Spotify Tidal... you're not really buying anything. You pay a monthly fee just FOR AN ACCESS to a full library of content. This is clearly stated in their ToS and even FAQs. It's completely like night and day. It's like buying a monthly gym membership and physically owning a gym itself. I just think this difference needs to be emphasized here.

This is why physical copies / physical media is also important. Sure DVDs and Blurays still have DRM, but given how streaming services remove or alter movies/episodes from shows, you are better off at least having a physical copy. same with books, i would rather have a physical copy, nobody can modify that .

as both a musician and a game developper, honestly, I don't think drm brings anything to us either

De-DRM plugins with Calibre are a lifesaver.

And it's not only about digital products. For example, you can't repair John Deere by yourself, it's a violation of law. So you don't own nearly everything.

A printer manufacturer is telling owners how to defeat the DRM in ink cartridges, aren't they violating the copyright act you mention?

intel 12th gen CPUs lack the instruction to play BlueRay because of DRM and there is no workaround, let that sink in

I don't understand your example you give at 5:28. Of course people who are looking to illegibly distribute files are going to do it with online file sharing services... who's arguing otherwise? I thought (at least one of) the functions of DRM was to prevent content from being copied. For example I know Spotify has an offline mode, I've never used it but from my understanding downloaded songs are encrypted and can only be listened to with the Spotify application while you are signed in. Do measures like this not prevent those songs from being distributed?

Just ignore that little black sits between my computer and the swear it's not ripping media streams off the wire and also ignore the fact that it is doing ssl interception.

In computer graphic world there is even worst it is called software as service/software rental. Many 3d apps turned into software rental with out perpetual license. These bloodsucking practice need to stahp 😩.
