As the parent of a teen with scoliosis, it can be overwhelming to determine what is the best treatment option. Scoliosis is most commonly prevalent in adolescents and is typically diagnosed between 10-18 years of age.
Scoliosis is not curable no matter the treatment you choose since most cases are idiopathic, and we have no way of correcting the cause of scoliosis. Although not curable, it is treatable. With proactive treatment, we can even reduce curves to make them smaller.

If we knew the cause, could we correct scoliosis? Probably not, because knowing the cause does not mean we will for sure be able to fix it once it evolves to a severe stage.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is difficult to detect in children and adolescents as it presents without pain. The most common symptom will be posture changes and uneven shoulders, ribs, and hips. The symptoms will be more cosmetic in the beginning. Parents of young children and adolescents should not take postural changes lightly during growth.

Early detection is beneficial, smaller curves always respond better, and younger patients always respond better. Once scoliosis is diagnosed, that is the smallest the curve will be until treated as curves progress over time, growth, and age. In conservative treatment, the smaller the curve and younger the patient, the more proactive you are at treating a smaller curve will more likely keep the curve smaller.

In traditional treatment options, the most common treatment is surgery, which is a very invasive treatment that alters a patient's life from that moment on. Curves are watched until they worsen to the point where surgery is an option.

At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we recommend treating curves around 15 degrees because if we can treat and reduce a curve at 15 degrees, we have a better chance of getting a better reduction and not having a severe curve near.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis should be treated proactively, reducing the structure that's associated with scoliosis, not just treating the symptoms associated with scoliosis.

This involves developing a customized treatment plan that will address all the patient's variables and associated conditions to achieve the best outcomes. It integrates multiple forms of treatment in a multi-modal approach.

At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we have a multi-modal approach that is customized and developed by one doctor to get the best results. Having a proactive multi-modal option is one key factor associated with good scoliosis treatment. We want to be ahead of the curve and make them smaller before they ever become severe.
