DR. NO | James Bond dispatches Professor Dent

“That’s a Smith & Wesson and you’ve had your six.” James Bond ruthlessly dispatches Professor Dent in DR. NO (1962). Three versions of this scene were written; in the first Dent fires an empty gun and then Bond shoots him dead, the second had Dent fire at Bond, miss and Bond fire in retaliation, the third had Bond shoot Dent before Dent could get to his gun. The first option was the one used in the final film.”

Almost 60 years later this still is one of the best scenes in all of James Bond films.

I love that he's playing solitaire. Not some brooding badass looking guy in the shadows sitting quietly for 8 hours. Keeps quietly busy.

My father told me about when he saw this back in 1962 and how surprised the audience was at the coldness of this scene, especially when 007 shoots Dent a second time. Audiences weren't quite ready for that.

“What happened to the professor?”
“He was poisoned.”
“With what?”
“Lead.”

“It’s a Smith and Wesson. And you’ve had your six.”

I liked this version of Bond more when he wasn't pulling off impossible shit but more like an actual spy.

Probably the only scene in all the Bond movies that is true to Fleming’s character. I saw this at the cinema when I was a young kid and the memory of how cold and ruthless Bond was remained with me for years.

Gotta admire both these guys out to kill each other still address the other respectfully as “Mr. Bond” and “Professor”!

Connery was the absolute pinnacle of Bond in the first three movies. Cold-blooded and meticulous. Probably killed him and finished his solitaire game with the body laying on the floor.

For anyone wondering...the reason Connery says "that's a Smith & Wesson and you've had your six", despite Dent CLEARLY using a Colt 1911 (which held seven in the mag and could hold eight total with one in the chamber) was because the script initially called for Dent to be using a REVOLVER in this scene. But at the last minute, someone decided they wanted Dent to use a suppressed weapon.

While revolvers CAN be suppressed, the only gun that fit the bill and was available to the production team at the time was the Colt 1911 with a suppressor on it, and so that is what they went with. Unfortunately, they switched guns and then never changed the line of dialogue to more accurately describe the gun that Dent ended up using in this scene, so Connery pointing out that Dent is using "a S&W" is simply wrong and sounds ridiculous, even if the line itself is a great one.

Also, as other people have pointed out, Bond didn't even really have to count the rounds because once the slide locks back on the 1911, it's empty. But that again points to the fact that a revolver was initially called for in this scene...without counting the six rounds off, there would be no way to know if Dent had another round or two left in the cylinder had he actually been using the S&W revolver that was initially in the script. But as you can see in the video, Dent DID fire off six rounds and his gun WAS empty...he simply was NOT using a S&W revolver as Bond claims, and the Colt 1911 he was using should've had AT LEAST seven rounds in it, and it could've held as many as eight.

And this is how efficiently the character was fleshed out. Ruthless. look at how emotionless Connery is. Cold eyes. What a performance by a legend. Will never be forgotten. R.I.P.

Back when he was a spy not a superhero.

Ruthless and cold. Connery IS James Bond.

Very good display of Bond’s “license to kill.” Also, take note of the clothes in this scene. Bond’s shirt and tie would great today as would Professor Dent’s outfit. The men in these movies were incredibly well dressed.

Connery as Bond, Often imitated, never duplicated.

The word "badass" was born from this scene.

He's a man doing his job. No passion, no overt malice, just getting the facts and eliminating the obstacles that want to keep him from doing his work. This was the essence of what Fleming wrote into Bond, a man who worked efficiently and effectively.

I was sad and devastated this morning when I found out that Sir Sean Connery passed away in his sleep at home in the Bahamas. While Brosnan was bond when I was a kid, the Connery movies were the ones that made me fall in love with the series.
Thank you so much Sir Sean Connery for all your contributions.
