I just went through about a dozen videos on portable chargers. Some went for positive/negative, some went to ground... many advised to switch the charger on before you connect the leads, some didn't even show it to be switched on.

This video was the most reasonable out of a dozen I just tried! Thank you.

One thing I would recommend to do, though, is not handle both leads with two hands at the same time to not risk running 600Amp through your heart.

This looks like the correct way to plug in your positive and negative cables. I've seen so many videos where people plug in the negative black cable to the negative port of the battery instead of a grounded metal block or bolt somewhere away from the alternator. The only time you would only plug in a negative cable to the actual negative battery pole is on a working car battery, and you were not using a portable battery jumper. And on the dead battery side, you would still plug the negative cable to a grounded piece of metal block.

yes i found it that simple too using the same 4 in 1 phaze charger model about £50 halfords. has good reviews but not sure about the negative views as it can have enough charge on it straight from the box and works perfect on a 2.0i. suv no problem and could obviously start something much bigger. having said that, it takes hours and hours to fully charge and you can see from the video, its fairly heavy with reasonably lengthed leads but can be hard to find a spot to rest anywhere up by the battery so careful not to scratch or even dent your car. thanks great post!

I bought the same portable jump starter last winter (2018 winter). It was a just in case, always be prepared type thing.
It says up to two litre. My car was 1.8 but didn't work. Should I have left the charger attached for longer? It's the only thing I can think off.
Any help/pointers or tips would be greatly appreciated... THANKS TO EACH AND EVERY PERSON WHO HAS TAKEN THE TIME TO READ THIS (and hopefully helped me out)

can you please explain how the current flows when jump starting the car? DC runs from negative to positive. we connect the positive to positive and the negative to the chassis. so, since that is a circuit (ground -negative / positive-live -> positive dead battery)...how is that charging the dead battery through the positive cable?
