Final Assembly series part 5

We do a prestart checklist on all of the fluids and lubrication points on the early Cat D4. This is a rough overview that should cover Caterpillar RD4 & D4 models 1936-1959. Some late 7U models have a hydraulic assist clutch & a transmission oil dipstick. This covers most coolant, oil and grease points. These are the fluids and greases we're going to use. not necessarily what you should use in your application. Selecting the correct fluids, oils and greases depends on your working environment and/or ambient temperatures. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler / dozer with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.

We are operators pretending to be mechanics!

Thanks for watching!

Regards,
Aaron & Greg "The cleaner"

My D2 has a bleeder petcock on the top of my pony motor to let the air out so it will fill all the way up with water. Maybe a D4 is different. Love your videos

I think the Alemite 1669-B Loose Fitting, Straight, SAE Special Short, 1/8" Male PTF is the grease fitting extension you needed at the 19:00 mark

There’s something rewarding about seeing the grease coming out from bearings and bushings I have a terrible habit of over greasing the 555 loader hoe has so much extra grease on the pins I actually feel bad wasting it but I can’t stop myself I need to see it come out maybe we need to start a “over greaser’s anonymous “ Aaron!
I like that you gentlemen are documenting the amounts and the product used very smart especially because you have an hour meter so you can stay completely on top of everything!
I hated when equipment operators that I would work with wouldn’t document the log book because some things are so critical to the proper function of a machine like the turntable on a crane it is imperative it be greased and very expensive to fix once the damage is done but the count down is on to a first start 😀🇨🇦

Hello Guys
What a marathon job to grease and add oil the oils, it's like you both are feeding the beast (D4). Getting close for the D4 shoes to go on (tracks) and with a little bit of fuel it well have life again. The cleaner has a new name with lolly pop in his mouth Kojak. LOL.
Hope I didn't offend you, Greg. Looking forward to EP 127. And Aaron who have great laugh.
Cheers guys.

What a wonderful video shows every aspect you need to know on a D4. I have used mystery engine oils in oil bath air cleaners.
I use John Deer cornhead grease in areas where I don't want wear to accumulate. Everywhere else I use Mannol grease and oils.

The grease zirk adapter was really cool. So many lubrication points and different lubricants.

You might consider a zinc additive, ZDDP, for the engine oil. I understand it is recommended for flat tappet camshaft engines.

If it doesn't have a reserve bottle on your radiator you need to have it at least a half an inch down for expansion other words it'll just push it out of the radiator cap
