Why I kill most of my baby goldfish…

Honestly my biggest point about culling is if we didn’t cull and I sold you a fish that was of low quality and it got ate by one of your other fish you’d be upset, you’d be upset if it died prematurely due to its poor genetics and you would also be upset if you got a fish and it grew out to be deformed and living a tortured life. Any possible outcome of me not culling is bad so I must cull to provide my customers the best experience possible

Petition to get the goldfish toys like a soccer ball and fill it partially with water and teach them how to play soccer .

This sucks. Especially having to make the decision to cull them. At least it’s for the good of the fish. I’m glad you make sure they all are healthy and will have a wonderful life!

As I have learned with raising chickens this past year, having ‘live stock’ means understanding ‘dead stock’ and also how to be humane when it comes to animals.

When I was young, we spent a number of years in Japan, and my dad got into raising ranchu. I remember culling babies, first looking for single tails and spikes coming out of their backs, and then as they got bigger, looking for other faults.

At one point, my dad acquired some babies out of the grand and reserve grand champions in Japan at the time, it was quite the honor, for that kind of a gift from the owner of them. When those babies were about an inch long, we had actual gangsters break into the house, and threatened my mom at gunpoint for those babies. And that was how fierce the competition was for the bloodlines, and the extremes people would go to, to obtain them.

I am glad you are considerate about the environment and not releasing the goldfish. It's shocking how many people just let them go

Quick question: What should I use to maintain a healthy environment for my goldfish? Any essential tank equipment? Thanks!

If the pond occasionally connects to other local bodies of water then you'd want to avoid placing non-native fish in it. I strongly doubt Ranchu's are going to be invasive in NH (their sight and mobility are low). However, point is still fairly made. When we're not talking about something like a Ranchu, cull % is much lower (say for Galaxy Rasboras or a common Bushynose).

It’s one of those topics where neither option is great, and you have to choose the least bad one.

Thanks for making the point about not releasing them into your pond!

For anyone who might still be skeptical: Those forces of nature also kill off certain fish that are born or develop illness and deformity. If a breeder sells you a sick or deformed fish because they didn't believe in culling, it may pass those weak genes on to future generations of their or your own fish. Same goes for any animal, really. Its just more humane in the long run to keep strong breeding stock and euthanize the rest than to breed weak fish because you dont want to kill anything.

So, the natural follow-up would be, how do you decide which are high quality out of a spawn like this?

Will you be able to use the cull fry to feed your turtles, other goldfish etc? Hope you can get use out of them for something

Sexual reproduction is high-risk, high-reward. Any breeder or farmer will tell you- not all genetic mixes are viable. We have a responsibility to keep genetic lines healthy.
But I can't see what makes a fancy goldfish healthy or unhealthy. I'd love to know what to look for.

What is the best way to identify and terminate the ones that are the least likely to thrive? Would it be inhumane to feed the weak to a natural predator?
