How Braces Work? | Dr. Nate | Orthodontist

We get a lot of questions, but the hardest one for me to answer is how do braces work.

It's something I went to school for 12 years for. Yes, that's right, 12 years! 5 Years of undergrad, 4 years of Dental School, and 3 years of Orthodontic Residency. It's very hard, to sum up all this information in 10 minutes, but I've tried my best.

Had braces when I was 16. Being young and stupid I didn't wear retainer and my teeth went wonky again. I recently started Invisalign and I'm not gonna screw it up again!

Interesting video. At around 3:30, u introduce the nickel titanium wire. It's crazy how what seems like such little force applied by that wire can move teeth/bone....still hard to wrap my head around that. Like does that wire really apply that much force, or is it just the slight continuous pressure that does that?

Also, can that wire expand teeth too ?

Hi Dr.Nate. I’m looking & searched for a videos about braces. But my question is can you pleased enlighten me. Because my son’s got finally put them the bottom braces. But they say that they didn’t usually put a colored rubber bands in the bottom braces. What do you think Dr. Nate? I was upset because I thought there’s a colored rubber bands both but not. What's the point of using steel if it's going to stay deformed? I didn't get that part. The other material that goes back to its original shape and takes your crooked teeth along for the ride, that was clearly explained.

im getting my braces removed exactly in a month. I had horrible teeth before. Now everything is alligned but I have Midline Asymmetry. My dentist already worked on this with elastic but i dont know why he told me to stop wearing them . Any guessses?

Hey doc, my son got braces 3 weeks ago and he’s lost 4 brackets. He lost the first one the day after getting them on, the next one he was brushing and it fell off the day after he lost the first bracket then a week after that two just popped off and still stuck to the wire right now. They’re just kinda hanging there they’re not connected to the tooth. Now his wires are moving side to side. He’s not eating anything he isn’t supposed too and is taking care of them so why are they popping off so easily? This shouldn’t be normal right? I had braces and did everything I wasn’t supposed to do and NEVER lost a bracket. Did they do a crappy job putting them on? On our way back from getting them on those blue things u put on your back teeth(on top) to keep you from hitting the brackets (turbos I think is what u call them) fell off and had to drive back and get it fixed 😡 did I get ripped off lol. When they fell off the glue is all on the bracket, no glue is left on the tooth.does this cause delay in his treatment?

My gums are swollen since last month there's no bleeding no pain they are just swollen.. even my orthodontist didn't say anything just prescribed 3 days antibiotics.. could you please share your feedback on this?🥺
