How To Properly Handle & Release BULL REDFISH

Here's something that might be counterintuitive...

Big fish, like bull redfish and slob snook, are actually quite fragile.

Yes, even though they're big and strong, it's really easy to mishandle them and set them up for infections or even give them fatal injuries.

Many people are not properly handling and releasing them, but it's actually really easy.

In this video, we've got world-record holder, Capt. Peter Deeks, catching some monster reds and showing us how to safely handle and release them.

You'll learn two ways to do this, plus the biggest mistake most anglers make that will most likely kill the fish (even though it swims off looking healthy).

If you want to catch big fish in the future, and want your kids and grandkids to be able to catch big fish, too, then you've got to see this video.

Have any questions about handling big fish?

Captain Deeks is the best! I've learned so much on his courses! I wish everyone views this on how fish conservation is done. Thank you all for such an important video!

Very good information in this video. I just bought the wrong net. I am curious that there was no discussion about ventilating the bull red.

Too many people don't use good fishing etiquette, or don't care to learn. Thanks for the info. My biggest issue is fish that have teeth or catfish with poisonous fins. Not sure if there is a better way to handle them...especially from several feet up in a boat or a pier. I also see people drag fish along rocky beaches and jetties out of ease, but that has to be terrible for the fish.

Thoughts on using a fish gripper vs touching or netting?

That's really good info to have, especially the part of not holding the fish by its jaw with the fish grips. Didn't know that could kill the fish. I see it all the time on fishing videos.

What about identifying whether you need to vent the fish and then demonstrating how to do it if necessary?

Thank you for this video… just moved down to Florida from Massachusetts so I’m used to grabbing my stripers right by the gills! Lmao, didn’t want to be “that guy” out on the water so thank you for the information.

I’ve read that touching the fishes gills can damage it

I thought the removal of the slim by the handler was debunked after a study was done?
