Scientists from the National University of Singapore are trying to reverse depleting coral levels with Lego blocks.

Despite being a relatively tiny country, Singapore is home to a third of the world's coral reefs.

Coral reefs protect the world's coastlines, are home to thousands of fish and are a vital part of the underwater ecosystem.

However, issues like land reclamation and coastal development have caused Singapore's reefs to deplete over the decades.

Imagine being a professional underwater diver and accidentally stepping on the Lego blocks while screaming in agony underwater.

I feel they pretty clearly showed that the plastic WASN'T being put in the ocean.. I don't understand the confusion

My impression is that they use the Lego to grow the coral the aquarium. Then they take off the Lego before planting them back in sea. I don’t think they would make such an obvious mistake.

I think this will either be PURE GENIUS or COMPLETE FAILURE...

I don't see a way in between.

You can do this with cement or other items. Its called coral fragging. I would use plastics not a great idea

Try putting less plastic in the ocean first and see if that helps.

Does Lego not break down into micro-plastics?

Actually no. That plastic crap is washing up out of the sea everywhere.

Don't be surprised when the local penguins come knocking on their door to complain that they can't focus on hunting for fish due to stepping on legos

I just don't understand how there are still so many projects out there trying to find 'new ways' to restore reefs. There are numerous proven methods out there which can technically be applied anywhere, and yet I constantly come across some weird new projects. Most of all, climate change is the grim reality why reefs will continue to disappear, so time invested in R&D of 'new methods' is time lost and money wasted. Coral restoration needs a reality check...
