King Charles’ Artist Admits Not Everyone Will Like the New Portrait

The King has unveiled the first completed official portrait of himself since the coronation.

The portrait, by British artist Jonathan Yeo, was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales’s 50 years as a member of The Drapers’ Company in 2022.

Discussing the controversial bold colours used across the canvas, Yeo conceded that “there will always be people who disagree with you, people that don’t agree with how you’ve done it.”

Looks like it was made by a serial killer

The only thing in my mind when I saw it was blood. He’s covered in blood with a blood soaked wall behind him.

If a child painted that, the parents would be concerned.

Why make the color red over the whole painting? Its one of the most terrible paintings ive ever seem. Especially one for a royal

So you want to tell everyone why you put Baphamet, one- eyed symbol, demons, and monarch butterfly programming in this portrait?

So much BS excuses for painting a horrible painting.

The use of a Monarch butteryfly over the right shoulder seems a bit 5th grade-ish. The rest of it just looks like a head floating in a pool of blood. Gruesome at best.

For such a well painted face, the rest is like 'what?'

I've looked at other works by Mr. Yeo, and his other portraits seem much more balanced.
He has done beautiful portraits of Prince Philip and the former Duchess of Cornwall, Her Majesty Queen Camilla.
He also used this same style for other figures he has painted, including his own father, but those portraits use different tones and have better definition and contrast.
I think the red in this portrait is totally overwhelming and detracts from the subject.
It makes a statement, but generally not a positive one.
And although the red has a slightly pink tone to it, it still illicits too much of a connection to imagery of fire and blood. Those are not kind symbols to be associated with a King, especially King Charles.
It has prompted unjustified vile remarks against the King.
Surely the artist wasn't oblivious to how this would be received, which really makes you question his intent, no matter how he tries to justify it.

Why would you take artistic liberties, especially in this way, of the King or any Monarch for that matter? What is wrong with you? You paint the King properly or step aside and let a truly artistic artist take the role. He needs a Regal Royal Portrait. You can always paint how you do with your other work at a nother time. If your intentions weren't meant for the work you were tasked to do, then you shouldn't be painting at all.

Its a great anti-monarch piece. Not sure how he got away with convincing anyone otherwise

Not everyone? Don't make me laugh, it's universally bad. How could they even approve this...

Don't like anything that requires an explanation. And it's supposed to be a portrait not a life story, should have gone with the same guy who did William and Katherine

The King should have been painted wearing The Garter Robes or a miitary uniform.
Very poor representation of His Majesty. Red on red?
Seriously?? The "artist" needs to go back to school.
