Ok so the fire thing was pretty okay, its more about your technique. Instead of just flicking the thing a bunch of times while holding it up in the air, what you should be doing is:
1. Place the tip of the starter onto whatever you are trying to start. Hold at an angle.
2. Place the striker close to the top of the rod, where your hand is.
3. The striker should be at an angle towards you. There should be a 45 degree angle between the rod and the striker, with the top of the striker pointing at you.
4. Run the striker down the starter with a brisk but careful and deliberate strike. It will produce a lot of sparks, just deal with it.

Do this maybe 3 or 4 times and something will eventually light.
