I cannot begin to tell you the comeback of my Dwarf Fighter's shenanigans (he has that one feat that allows him to heal each time he dodges)

if you aren't out of resources by the end of the day, you had a break day

These are the key rules when playing with the optional hard mode rules. A short rest is 8 hours and a long rest is a week.

I've been playing on and off (mostly off) for 7 years now, I don't think I've ever taken a short rest

Simple house rule I use to encourage short rests: they only take 10 minutes!

wtf, why did no one tell me about this for the last 7 years???

I run a game where short rests take 8 hours and long take a week (because I am evil and hate my players) so this comes up regularly lol

I let them recover fully after long resting, that way I can push harder when an arc is meant to be rough.

right now they're in a City siege as defenders so there's always fights going on, they have to actively decide to stop fighting or continue until they're dead.

forced them to resource manage better, specially after one of them died and his soul was not willing to come back because he was being revived by an undead.

He got closure and the players pressed on.

Hit dice are for when you're OUT of rests. Long rest replenish all of them, short rests half, and in both of them you heal entirely
